BLACK HISTORY MONTH IS A TIME FOR ALL CHESTERFIELD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT AND BE INSPIRED BY BLACK HEROES.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS HONORS DIVERSITY AND THE CONTRIBUTION OF OUR BLACK STUDENTS, TEACHERS, EMPLOYEES, AND FAMILIES IN OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITIES PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE. TONIGHT'S AGENDA INCLUDES A SCHOOL BOARD RESOLUTION IN HONOR OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND THE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS OF BLACK AMERICANS TO OUR NATION'S ADVANCEMENT. THE FIRST WILL BE HELD FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT'S PROPOSED FISCAL YEAR 2025 OPERATING BUDGET.

THIS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY THE PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE PROPOSED FY 25 CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PLAN.

WE'RE VERY INTERESTED IN HEARING YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT BOTH PROPOSED PLANS.

THE SCHOOL BOARD WILL TAKE ACTION TO APPROVE THE BUDGET AND CIP AT THE FEBRUARY 22ND SPECIAL MEETING OF THE SCHOOL BOARD.

I'M HERE AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SCHOOL BOARD'S ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

I'VE BEEN ON THE COMMITTEE FOR, COMING UP ON THREE YEARS.

BEEN CHAIRMAN FOR MOST OF THAT.

WE ALSO HAVE THREE OTHER MEMBERS WHO HAVE JOINED US TONIGHT FROM THE COMMITTEE.

WE HAVE THE PLEASURE OF SHARING OUT OUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP TO THE SCHOOL BOARD ANNUALLY.

THAT HAPPENED IN DECEMBER.

WE DECIDED TO COME AND SPEAK WITH YOU ALL TONIGHT BECAUSE WE HAVE NEW FACES.

AND YOU ALL MAY HAVE SEEN OUR PRESENTATION.

YOU MAY NOT HAVE. WE JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU A COUPLE OF THE REALLY IMPORTANT THINGS THAT WE THINK THE DISTRICT NEEDS TO SPEND SOME TIME ADDRESSING.

THE ONE THAT I'M GOING TO ADDRESS, IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO BOTH CAPEX AND OPEX.

SO WE DECIDED TO GO AHEAD AND TALK ABOUT IT HERE IN THE BUDGET SESSION.

THE AS AS WE LOOK AROUND OUR DISTRICT FOR THINGS THAT WE CAN DO TO IMPROVE OUR TO REDUCE OUR IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT, IMPROVE OUR OPERATIONS, AND HOPEFULLY REDUCE OUR OPERATING COSTS.

THERE'S ONE THING THAT REALLY STANDS OUT.

WE HAVE SOME COOL STUFF THAT WE TALK ABOUT, AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE THAT WILL HELP CHESTERFIELD COUNTY BE ON THE LEADING EDGE OF A SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN VIRGINIA. THIS ONE, UNFORTUNATELY, IS SOMETHING WE NEED TO DO JUST TO KEEP UP.

MORE THAN HALF OF OUR DISTRICT IS STILL LIT BY, AGING LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY, T8 LIGHTS.

THE STAFF HAS DONE A GOOD JOB OF TRYING TO CONVERT TO LED LIGHTS OVER THE YEARS.

BUT THERE IS A LOT OF FRUIT LEFT IN THE TREE.

A COUPLE OF THINGS ABOUT THAT.

THE LED LIGHTS USE 50 TO 60% LESS ENERGY THAN TRADITIONAL LIGHTING DOES.

AND OF COURSE, THAT EQUATES DIRECTLY TO OPERATING EXPENSE.

LOOKING ACROSS THE DISTRICT, WE FEEL LIKE A CONVERSION.

A DISTRICT WIDE CONVERSION COULD PUT BETWEEN 900,000 AND 1,000,002 BACK IN OUR OPERATING BUDGET ANNUALLY, EVERY YEAR FOR THE NEXT 25 YEARS. THAT'S HOW LONG THESE LIGHTS WILL LAST.

ANOTHER THING DIRECTLY RELATED TO THAT.

IF WE PUT LIGHTS IN OUR SCHOOLS THAT LAST LONGER, THAT'S ONE LESS THING THAT OUR PRINCIPALS HAVE TO SPEND TIME THINKING ABOUT DURING THE DAY.

THEY CAN FOCUS MORE ON INSTRUCTION.

IF WE TAKE THAT OFF THEIR PLATES.

IT'S ALSO GOING TO REDUCE OUR CARBON IMPACT.

BETWEEN 6 AND 7000 TONS PER YEAR COULD BE REDUCED JUST BY MAKING THIS CONVERSION.

THE STAFF, AS I MENTIONED, HAS BEEN WORKING TOWARD DOING A CONVERSION, ANNUALLY AS FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE.

THAT LEADS TO A COUPLE OF THINGS.

IT LEADS TO VARIATION IN PRODUCT, VARIATION IN ESTHETICS.

WE SORT OF HAVE TO PICK WHICH SCHOOLS GET DONE FIRST, WHICH CAN LEAD TO EQUITY CONCERNS BETWEEN ACROSS THE DISTRICT.

OUR RECOMMENDATION IS THAT THIS BE DONE AS A SINGLE PROJECT.

WE ESTIMATE, AND WE'VE WORKED WITH CLAY BOWLES, THE DEPUTY COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR, TO KIND OF TRUE UP OUR NUMBERS AND TALK THROUGH HOW THIS WOULD WORK LOGISTICALLY.

WE CAME TO SORT OF THE SAME CONCLUSIONS THAT WE FEEL LIKE THIS IS BETWEEN 4.9 AND MAYBE $5.2 MILLION PROJECT.

AND THE REACTION WAS, HOW CAN WE POSSIBLY SPEND $5 MILLION ON LIGHTS WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO PAY OUR TEACHERS? AND THE RIGHT ANSWER FOR THAT IS THAT MONEY IS GOING TO BE SPENT ANYWAY AND MORE.

THIS PROJECT, IF DONE AS A SINGLE PROJECT, WOULD PAY FOR ITSELF IN ABOUT SEVEN YEARS, WITH THE PRODUCT LASTING ANOTHER 18 YEARS AFTER THAT.

THAT'S MONEY BACK IN OUR POCKETS.

INSTEAD OF SENDING IT TO THE POWER COMPANY.

AND THOSE PROJECTIONS, BY THE WAY, COSTS ARE AT TODAY'S RATES.

WE KNOW THOSE ARE JUST GOING TO KEEP INCREASING.

NOT NOT NECESSARILY JUST TRYING TO MOVE WITH A VERY FORWARD THINKING IDEA OF EV BUSSES, BUT EVEN THE BASIC UPGRADE OF GETTING RID OF OUR OLDER DIESEL BUSSES THAT HAVE VERY BAD FUEL MILEAGE AND COST A LOT OF MONEY TO MAINTAIN AND KEEP ON THE ROAD.

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO ENCOURAGE THE BOARD, AS A COMMITTEE AS WELL, THAT WE WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU ALL TO FOCUS ON, UPGRADING OUR SCHOOL BUS FLEET TO HAVE A MORE RELIABLE, SLIGHTLY MORE FUEL EFFICIENT FLEET AS WE CONTINUE TO LOOK FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD AT FURTHER, MORE FUEL EFFICIENT OPTIONS FOR THE COUNTY.

I'M HERE TONIGHT TO ASK THE SCHOOL BOARD TO FUND EVERY STUDENT IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY RIDING, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AND RFID CARD.

A COUPLE YEARS AGO, OUR BUS DRIVERS WERE INTRODUCED TO THE TYLER TECHNOLOGIES TABLET.

IT IS IN EACH BUS.

IT'S SECURELY ATTACHED TO THE BUS WITHIN ARM'S REACH OF THE DRIVER.

THE TABLET SHOWS DIRECTIONS TO THE DRIVER AND THE NAMES OF STUDENTS AT EACH STOP ON THE ROUTE.

FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS, THEY WERE GIVEN AND ISSUED AN RFID CARD, SO WHEN GETTING ON THE BUS IN THE MORNING, THE STUDENT WOULD TAP THE RFID CARD TO THE READER BOX.

THE TABLET CHIMES, LETTING THE DRIVER AND STUDENT KNOW THAT THEY'VE BEEN LOADED ONTO THE TABLET.

THE STUDENT COULD DO THE SAME THING WHEN EXITING THE BUS AT SCHOOL.

WHEN THE DRIVER ARRIVES AT THE SCHOOL IN THE AFTERNOON, THE STUDENTS DO THE SAME THING TAP THEIR CARD, THE TABLET CHIMES, LETTING BOTH THE STUDENT AND DRIVER KNOW THEY ARE LOADED ONTO THE TABLET.

WHEN THE STUDENTS DISEMBARK AT THEIR STOP, THEY AGAIN TAP OFF THE BUS.

IF A STUDENT SHOULD ATTEMPT TO EXIT THE BUS AT A STOP THAT IS NOT THEIR ASSIGNED STOP, THE TABLET WILL MAKE A DIFFERENT SOUND, ALERTING THE DRIVER OF THE ATTEMPT.

THIS WAY, THE DRIVER CAN REDIRECT THE STUDENT TO THE CORRECT STOP.

NOT EVERY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT HAS A CARD.

I HAD TO WAIT UNTIL NOVEMBER 3RD OF THIS YEAR FOR MOST OF MY STUDENTS TO RECEIVE THEIR CARDS.

I STILL HAVE A FEW STUDENTS THAT DON'T HAVE CARDS.

THIS IS BECAUSE THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT RAN OUT OF FUNDS.

I HAVE A NEW KINDERGARTEN STUDENT THAT HAS NEVER HAD A CARD.

I HAVE SEVERAL OTHER STUDENTS THAT HAVE COME ONTO MY ROUTE AND THEY DO NOT HAVE CARDS.

THEY'RE WONDERING WHY THEIR CLASSMATES HAVE CARDS AND THEY DO NOT.

I'M ASKING FOR THE BOARD TO FIND MONEY FOR EVERY STUDENT TO HAVE ACCESS TO RFID CARDS.

RFID CARDS DO NOT LAST FOREVER.

IT IS A PLASTIC CARD.

IT LOOKS LIKE A CREDIT CARD.

IT IS EMBEDDED WITH A CHIP.

YOU'RE GIVING THESE CARDS TO KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE.

THEY WILL NOT LAST THEIR ENTIRE EDUCATION AND PUBLIC SCHOOL IN ELEMENTARY THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL.

THEY BREAK.

THEY CHEW ON THEM, THEY TWIST THEM.

THEY JUST WILL NOT LAST.

EVEN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS NEED THESE CARDS.

WHEN STUDENTS BOARD THE BUS, THE SAME THING HAPPENS.

BUT WE HAVE TO ASK THEM FOR THEIR NAME.

WE MUST SEARCH THE ENTIRE ROUTE FOR THE STUDENT'S NAME.

SCROLL THROUGH THE TABLET TRYING TO FIND A MATCH.

IT TAKES TIME.

IF THE DRIVER IS A RUNNER, ONE THAT IS A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE ROUTE, IT TAKES MORE TIME.

THIS MAKES DRIVERS AND STUDENTS LATE TO SCHOOL AND CREATES A SNOWBALL EFFECT THROUGH MIDDLE, HIGH SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ROUTES.

BUS DRIVERS CANNOT BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS WHEN THEY CANNOT LOOK THEM IN THE EYE AND GREET THEM WITH A CARD THE STUDENT WOULD TAP.

THE TABLET DISPLAYS THEIR NAME, AND THE DRIVER CAN REPEAT THE STUDENT'S NAME WITH A GREETING.

IN THE AFTERNOON, THE STUDENT DOES THE SAME THING AT SCHOOL.

IF THE STUDENT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO RIDE THE BUS HOME IN THE AFTERNOON, THEY'LL TAP IT AND WILL MAKE A DIFFERENT SOUND, ALERTING THE DRIVER TO ASSIST THE STUDENT IN FINDING THE CORRECT BUS.

SAME THING IF THE STUDENT ATTEMPTS TO EXIT THE BUS.

THIS IS FOR HIGH SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AT A STOP THAT'S NOT ASSIGNED TO THEM.

SOME OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RIDE SEVEN DIFFERENT BUSSES A DAY.

AND IT'S 2020.

FOR MOST MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ALL HAVE CELL PHONES.

IT WOULD BE IDEAL IF THERE IS A WAY WE COULD USE THAT PHONE TO TAP AND LOAD, SIMILAR TO YOU USING YOUR PHONE TO TAP AND PAY IT AT STORES.

IN THE MEANTIME, I'M ASKING THE BOARD TO FIND A WAY THAT EVERY STUDENT SHOULD HAVE AN RFID CARD.

I HOPE IT IS IN THE BUDGET.

FOR CONTEXT, THOSE NUMBERS WOULD EQUATE TO AN AVERAGE OF 49,000 STUDENTS GETTING A HOT MEAL EVERY SINGLE DAY THAT THEY WALKED INTO THE BUILDING OR COMMERCIALLY, THE EQUIVALENT OF THE YEARLY SALES FIGURES FOR ALL OF OUR FAVORITE CHICKEN SANDWICH RESTAURANTS IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY.

AS MANY OF MY STAFF WILL TELL YOU, THIS IS A LOT OF FOOD.

I AM HERE TONIGHT TO SPEAK ON THE SEVERE MISCOMMUNICATION REGARDING, POTENTIAL NEW RESTRICTIONS ON EARLY RELEASE FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS.

EARLY RELEASE IS A PRIVILEGE MANY STUDENTS SPEND YEARS WORKING TOWARDS FOR THEIR SENIOR YEAR, AND AS OF LATE, THERE HAS BEEN TALK OF CHANGES IN POLICY REGARDING EARLY RELEASE.

HOWEVER, SIMPLY FROM SPEAKING TO MY FELLOW STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, IT HAS BECOME CLEAR THAT THERE IS NO COMMUNICATION ON WHAT THESE CHANGES ARE.

I'VE HEARD EARLY RELEASES BEING ELIMINATED ENTIRELY.

I HAVE HEARD THAT THERE WILL BE VAGUE ADDITIONAL RESTRICTIONS TO WHO CAN AND CAN'T APPLY FOR EARLY RELEASE.

COUNSELORS AND TEACHERS ARE BEING GIVEN CONFLICTING INFORMATION, AND IN TURN, STUDENTS ARE RECEIVING CONFLICTING INFORMATION.

THE CITED REASONS FOR THESE CHANGES HAVE BEEN SIMILARLY VAGUE, AND TO BE BLUNT, STUDENTS ARE GOING TO FIND WAYS TO SKIP SCHOOL IF THEY WANT TO SKIP.

STUDENTS USING EARLY RELEASE AS AN EXCUSE TO SKIP SCHOOL ARE GOING TO DO IT ANYWAYS.

RESTRICTING EARLY RELEASE WOULD BE A TEMPORARY FIX FOR WHAT I BELIEVE IS AN ENTIRELY SEPARATE ISSUE.

I SIMPLY THINK THERE NEEDS TO BE COMMUNICATION REGARDING THESE POTENTIAL POLICY CHANGES WITH THE COUNSELORS AND TEACHERS.

I STAND BEFORE YOU THIS EVENING TO ADDRESS MY CONCERNS ABOUT EARLY RELEASE FOR SENIORS.

THE FIRST POINT I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE THIS EVENING IS THAT YOU ALL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT EACH OF YOUR STUDENTS DAY TO DAY LIVES ARE LIKE, WHO THEY ARE, WHAT RESPONSIBILITIES THEY HAVE, WHAT THEY NEED IN ORDER TO LEARN, AND EVERY OTHER ASPECT THAT CORRELATES WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH.

WHAT GOES ON AT HOME PLAYS A HUGE PART IN WHY STUDENTS MAY NEED A REDUCED COURSE.

IMAGINE THE OUTCOME OF STUDENTS IN LOW INCOME FAMILIES WHO ARE FORCED TO OBTAIN A JOB WITHOUT THE GIVEN TIME TO DO SO.

EVEN STUDENTS IN LOW.

OH, EVEN STUDENTS.

EVEN SENIORS.

MY APOLOGY. GIVE ME A SECOND.

EVEN SENIORS WORKING TO SAVE UP FOR COLLEGE THEMSELVES, WITH OR WITHOUT A SCHOLARSHIP, DESPITE THE FACT THAT NOT EVERY HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HAS A JOB.

THERE ARE MULTIPLE ATHLETES, SCHOLARS WHO PUT MULTIPLE HOURS INTO SCHOOL OUTSIDE OF MANDATED SCHOOL HOURS, BABYSITTERS, SENIORS CHALLENGED WITH RIGOROUS COLLEGE PREP, AND SENIORS WHO SIMPLY NEED A BREAK.

THEY NEED TIME. THEY NEED SOME TIME OFF TOO.

THIS IS A PRIVILEGE THAT THOMASVILLE STUDENTS HAVE LOOKED FORWARD TO FOR YEARS, SO WHY TAKE IT AWAY NOW? I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY MY COUNSELOR THAT THERE HAS BEEN A LACK OF COMMUNICATION AS FAR AS THE REASONING.

I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROPOSED REASONING FOR EXEMPTING EARLY RELEASE IS FOR ENRICHMENT.

MY QUESTION.

IS WHAT EXACTLY MAKES YOU ALL THINK THAT ENRICHMENT IS GUARANTEED? IF THESE YOUNG ADULTS ARE GIVEN EXTRA CLASSES THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE ZERO PASSION OR INTEREST IN, IT WILL ONLY CREATE BURNOUT.

TEACHING METHODS, KNOWLEDGE AND MOTIVATION ARE SOME OF THE FACTORS OF ENRICHMENT.

NOT EVEN YOUR STUDENTS WITH FULL DAY SCHEDULES ARE ASSURED IMPROVEMENT EITHER BECAUSE OF THEIR TEACHERS, THEIR PREFERRED LEARNING METHODS, THEIR MENTAL HEALTH, THEIR SELF MOTIVATION, AND EVEN THEIR ENVIRONMENT.

RECONSIDER THE REASONS IT WAS PERMITTED TO BEGIN WITH.

WE DESERVE THAT PRIVILEGE JUST AS MUCH.

STUDENTS WHO HAVE A FEW CREDITS LEFT IN THEIR SENIOR YEAR HAVE THE CHOICE TO HAVE A FULL SCHEDULE.

IT'LL ONLY STICK IF THEY ARE WILLING.

WE ATTEND SCHOOL BY LAW.

WE DON'T HAVE A CHOICE WHEN IT COMES TO SCHOOL.

THIS IS THE LAST YEAR FOR US.

PLEASE DON'T TAKE THE ONLY CHOICE WE HAVE LEFT.

PUT YOUR STUDENTS MENTAL HEALTH OVER THE CONVENIENCE OF THE COUNTY.

I FIRMLY DISAGREE WITH THE REMOVAL OF REMOVING EARLY RELEASE FOR SENIORS.

THE MAIN REASONS FOR DOING SO IS, AS MY COLLEAGUE JUST MENTIONED BEFORE ME, THE ASPECTS OF ENRICHMENT.

COUNCILORS HAVE BEEN TELLING STUDENTS THAT THERE HAS BEEN A MARKED.

THE REASON WHY THEY WOULD REMOVE IT IS TO FURTHER ENRICH THEIR STUDENTS, WHETHER THAT BE THROUGH CTC COURSES OR VIA ANYTHING ELSE.

HOWEVER, THAT IS WHAT THE FIRST THREE YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL ARE FOR.

THE FIRST THREE YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL ARE FOR FINDING OUT WHO YOU WANT TO BE.

YOUR SENIOR YEAR IS FINDING OUT HOW YOU WANT TO BE IT.

THERE IS NO BETTER EXAMPLE THAN WHAT WAS ACTUALLY HAPPENED TONIGHT.

WITH ALL OUR RECOGNITION FOR THE CTC STUDENTS, GIVEN RECOGNITION FOR THINGS THEY ASPIRE TO BE AND WHAT THEY WANT TO DO, BY GIVING SENIORS THE ABILITY TO HAVE EARLY RELEASE, THEY CAN FURTHER ENRICH THEIR OWN LIVES IN ORDER TO MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES, BECAUSE THERE IS NO GREATER HONOR THAN TO ACTUALLY GO OUT INTO THE REAL WORLD AND EXPERIENCE REAL LIFE THROUGH THE CHOICES THAT YOU MAKE YOURSELF.

IT'S THE TRANSITION STAGE BETWEEN BEING A CHILD AND ADOLESCENT AND TO BECOMING AN ADULT.

AND BY GIVING THE STUDENTS THE CHOICES TO UNDERGO SUCH TRANSITION, THEY WILL FURTHER ENRICH THEIR OWN LIVES THROUGH THEIR OWN CHOICES.

NOW, I DO UNDERSTAND THE CONCERN OF STUDENTS NOT BEING ABLE TO ATTEND CLASSES AND THE LARGE PROBLEM THAT IS STUDENTS SKIPPING.

BUT AS MY PEERS HAVE SAID BEFORE ME, STUDENTS WILL SKIP NO MATTER WHAT.

AND EVEN THOUGH THAT, THAT PROBLEM COULD BE POTENTIALLY DECREASED BY STUDENTS ATTENDING MORE CLASSES, I THINK IT WOULD LARGELY CAUSE STUDENTS TO LOSE, AND WANT TO SKIP MORE.

BECAUSE HOW MANY SENIORS ARE BEING FORCED TO TAKE ART? ONE, IF WE UNDERGO THIS, HOW MANY SENIORS WOULD BE FORCED TO TAKE CLASSES THAT THEY HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST IN? THEY WOULD JUST WANT TO BE SKIPPED CLASSES EVEN MORE, BECAUSE THEY WOULD LOSE THE MOTIVATION TO ATTEND THE CLASSES THAT THEY WANTED TO PICK.

FOR INSTANCE, I MYSELF HAVE EARLY RELEASE FOR A SINGLE CLASS.

I CHOSE ALL THE CLASSES THAT I WANTED TO TAKE, AND I ATTEND ALL THE CLASSES THAT I WANTED TO TAKE.

WITH MY EARLY RELEASE BLOCK, I USED THAT AS A STUDY HALL BLOCK IN ORDER TO GET MORE CLASSES, BECAUSE I TOOK A VERY RIGOROUS COURSE LOAD.

THIS YEAR, I'M ABLE TO USE MY STUDY HALL BLOCK TO GET THE WORK DONE, AND SO I DON'T FALL BEHIND AS MUCH.

STUDENTS CAN DO SOMETHING SIMILAR, OR THEY CAN MAKE WHATEVER CHOICES THEY'D LIKE, BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, THEY ARE SENIORS AND THEY ARE ABOUT TO BECOME REAL CITIZENS.

SO WE NEED TO BE A LITTLE BIT MORE HONED IN ON THAT CHILD.

AS HUNDREDS OF OUR STUDENTS CHEER ON THEIR CLASSMATES AT GAMES BETWEEN SCHOOLS, WHICH ARE HOSTED DURING LUNCH BLOCKS THROUGHOUT THE WINTER SEASON.

OUR HIGH SCHOOLS HAVE ALSO CREATED MEDFORD CHEER TEAMS TO WIDEN OUR INCLUSION EFFORTS.

OVER THE PAST YEAR, AND IN ADDITION TO ADDING UNIFIED BOCCE AND TRACK AT THE SECONDARY LEVELS OR SECONDARY LEVEL.

EXCUSE ME. WE HAVE ALSO SEEN EXPANSION AND ENHANCEMENTS WITH STUDENT EXPOSURE AND THE GENERAL MENU OF OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO THEM.

SPECIFICALLY, WE ADDED DIVING LAST YEAR, WHICH IS A COMBINED COMPONENT WITH ALREADY EXISTING SWIM TEAMS. OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH DIVE RVA HAS WITNESSED A THREE FOLD MEMBERSHIP INCREASE WITHIN ONE YEAR, WITH MORE THAN HALF OF THOSE PARTICIPANTS THIS YEAR ALREADY QUALIFYING FOR THE

WHERE PREVIOUSLY THIS EXPOSURE AND OPPORTUNITY DID NOT EXIST, CCPS WAS ALSO RECOGNIZED EARLIER THIS YEAR AS AN EMERGING LOCAL LEADER FOR AQUATICS FOR GROWING ACCESS AND EQUITY IN THIS SPORT.

ADDITIONALLY, CCPS WAS CHOSEN TO CO-HOST ALONG WITH HENRICO VIA THE RICHMOND FORUM AND TOURISM GROUPS.

WHAT HAS BEEN BILLED AS THE OLYMPICS OF SPEECH AND DEBATE, WHERE THOUSANDS OF PARTICIPANTS AND SPONSORS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY WILL COMPETE IN OUR AREA IN 2026.

VERY EXCITED TO HOST THEM IN OUR CCPS SCHOOLS.

RELATED TO THIS, CCPS IS ALSO WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE RICHMOND FORUM TO EXTEND SPEECH AND DEBATE PROGRAMS AND COMPETITIONS TO OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS AS EARLY AS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

FINALLY, WE HAVE AN EMERGING SPORT WITH WOMEN'S WRESTLING.

AN EMERGING SPORT IS ESTABLISHED BY THE VHSL AFTER ENOUGH INTEREST AND PARTICIPATION EXISTS WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH'S MEMBER DISTRICTS TO CONSIDER ADDING THE SPORT OR PROGRAM PROPER.

TO DATE, WRESTLING HAS BEEN A COED ESTABLISHMENT.

THE EMERGING DESIGNATION CARRIES FOR THREE YEARS BEFORE A FINAL DETERMINATION IS MADE ON WHETHER TO CREATE A FULLY INDEPENDENT PROGRAM.

HOWEVER, WE ARE PROUD THAT IN ITS INAUGURAL YEAR LAST YEAR, CCPS HAD SEVERAL FEMALE WRESTLING STATE CHAMPIONS TAKE THE PODIUM.

HISTORICALLY, STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN VHSL SANCTIONED ACTIVITIES COULD BE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS VIA REGIONAL AND STATE COMPETITION PLAY. BEING ONE OF THE FEW SELECTED TO AN ALL REGION OR ALL STATE, FIRST OR SECOND TEAM, OR PARTICIPATION IN THE KEN TILLEY LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, WHERE STUDENTS ATTEND, GLEAN IDEAS, AND ENVISION INITIATIVES AND OTHER MEANS BY WHICH TO ENHANCE AND IMPROVE THE OVERALL CULTURE OF THEIR RESPECTIVE HIGH SCHOOLS.

EVEN MORE NOTEWORTHY IS THAT THE ALL COUNTY TEAMS ARE NOT LIMITED TO VHSL ATHLETIC AND ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES, BUT ALSO INCLUDES MEDFORD LEAGUE AND FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS GROUPS LIKE BAND, SHOW, CHOIR, ART, DANCE, ETC.

THIS AMOUNT IS IN LINE WITH CCPS CONSTRUCTIONS BUDGET EFFORT FOR THIS PROJECT, AND HAS NO IMPACT ON THE OVERALL MAJOR MAINTENANCE BUDGET.

FULLY RECODED THE ROOF THERE, EXTENDED THE USEFUL LIFE, AND EXTENDED OUR WARRANTY FOR A 25 TO 30 YEARS.

AND I'M VERY HAPPY TO SAY THAT EVERGREEN ELEMENTARY IS IN OUR SECOND WAVE OF SOLAR PROJECTS, WITH AN ESTIMATION OF ROUGHLY 100% OF, METER ATTENUATION WITH THAT SOLAR PROJECT.

SO, IN SHORT, THE ANSWER IS YES.

ROOF RESTORATION PROJECTS CAN BE CONSIDERED FOR SOLAR POWER.

WHEN PROJECTS GET TO A CERTAIN LEVEL, THEY COME OVER TO MY DEPARTMENT FOR LARGER PROJECTS.

THE FACILITIES AND MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT WITH THEIR PM VENDORS ESTABLISHES CRITERIA FOR EXISTING ROOFS.

A NUMBER OF PENETRATIONS, AGE, USEFUL LIFE, AMOUNT OF DETERIORATION, UV DEGRADATION, THINGS OF THAT NATURE, AND THROUGH A MATRIX THAT THEY HAVE DEVELOPED WITH THE HELP OF THAT VENDOR. THEY ESSENTIALLY PICK THEIR TOP CANDIDATES FOR RESTORATION OR REPLACEMENT.
