COMMENTS FROM THE AUDIENCE ARE PROHIBITED AND ARE IN VIOLATION OF SECTION 18.2-415 OF THE CODE OF VIRGINIA DISORDERLY CONDUCT AND PUBLIC PLACES AND SCHOOL BOARD POLICY 6141.

ON MAY 10TH, WHICH WAS SCHOOL NURSE DAY, CHESTERFIELD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS LEADERS SWOOPED INTO BELLWOOD ELEMENTARY TO SURPRISE, SURPRISE DAWN GRIDER WITH THE NEWS THAT SHE IS THE CCPS NURSE OF THE YEAR.

AS A PROCLAMATION FROM THE GOVERNOR SAID, STUDENTS TODAY FACE COMPLEX AND LIFE THREATENING HEALTH PROBLEMS. SCHOOL NURSES ACT AS A LIAISON TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY, FAMILIES AND HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS ON BEHALF OF CHILDREN'S HEALTH BY PROMOTING WELLNESS AND IMPROVING HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR THE CHILDREN OF THE COMMONWEALTH.

BELLWOOD ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL JENNIFER RUDD CELEBRATED DAWN'S SUCCESS, SAYING FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE'S PHILOSOPHY AND TEACHINGS EMPHASIZE THAT THE NURSE MUST USE HER BRAIN, HEART AND HANDS TO CREATE HEALTH HEALING ENVIRONMENTS TO CARE FOR PATIENTS, BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT AND MRS. GRIDER PRACTICES THAT THEORY EACH AND EVERY DAY WHILE LEADING OUR CLINIC AT ELEMENTARY.

I LOVE BEING A NURSE AT BELLWOOD ELEMENTARY.

THE KIDS ARE AMAZING, THE STAFF ARE AMAZING, THE ENVIRONMENT IS AMAZING.

THERE ARE SO MANY NEEDS THAT GET OVERLOOKED BY OUR CHILDREN THAT CALL SCHOOL THEIR SAFE PLACE.

AND I WANT TO BE THAT SAFE PLACE FOR THEM THERE CONSISTENTLY EVERY DAY.

SO THAT IS MY GOAL.

AND THE STAFF AT BELLWOOD ELEMENTARY ARE ALSO JUST AS AMAZING AS THE STUDENTS.

AND I LOVE IT.

I JUST LOVE IT. WELL, WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE DAWN AT BELLWOOD, AND IT'S A BETTER PLACE AND A SAFER PLACE BECAUSE WE HAVE HER WITH US.

BUT SHE DOESN'T JUST TAKE CARE OF THE CHILDREN.

SHE TAKES CARE OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US AS WELL.

MAKES SURE THAT WE'RE SAFE AND WE'RE CARED FOR.

WE LOVE HER.

ART EDUCATION IS A VITAL, INTEGRAL PART OF K-12 CURRICULUM AS IT FOSTERS CREATIVITY, PROVIDES AN OUTLET FOR EXPRESSION, AND IMPROVES BOTH CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS. LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES PRESENTED TO STUDENTS THROUGH OUR VISUAL ARTS PROGRAMS HAVE LASTING EFFECTS ON SELF-CONFIDENCE AND CAN HELP TO OPEN PATHWAYS FOR FUTURE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES. CONGRATULATIONS.

OKAY. WELL, IT'S MY HONOR TO CONGRATULATE YOU AGAIN ON THIS AWARD AND TO TELL YOU THAT AS A TEACHER IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY FOR 34 YEARS, I KNOW MANY, MANY OF MY STUDENTS ONLY CAME TO SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THE ART CLASS THEY GOT TO ATTEND.

AND YOU ARE REALLY TOUCHING MANY, MANY STUDENTS AND ALLOWING THEM TO EXPRESS THEIR CREATIVITY.

AND I KNOW YOU'RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN LOTS OF STUDENT'S LIVES EVERY DAY.

I HAVE THE ABSOLUTE MOST AMAZING RESOURCE TEAM WHO SUPPORT ME THROUGH ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING.

AND WE HAVE AN ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS ADMIN TEAM AND THE STUDENTS THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY BEYOND FANTASTIC.

SO I AM TRULY THE LUCKIEST EVER SO.

ERICA HARRIS, SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER AT MONACAN HIGH SCHOOL, WAS AWARDED THE OUTSTANDING TEACHER OF AMERICAN HISTORY AWARD BY THE LOCAL CHAPTER OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, THEN WENT ON TO WIN THE STATEWIDE AWARD, TOO.

THIS AWARD HONORS FULL TIME TEACHERS OF HISTORY AND RELATED FIELDS SUCH AS SOCIAL STUDIES, GOVERNMENT AND CITIZENSHIP, EDUCATION IN GRADES 5 THROUGH 12.

IT WAS ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO WALK PAST YOUR CLASSROOM AND SEE SOMETHING AMAZING GOING ON.

AND I CAN. I HAVE EVERY CONFIDENCE THAT THIS IS A VERY WELL PLACED AWARD.

I WROTE BASICALLY A HUGE ESSAY ABOUT ALL THIS STUFF, THE FUN STUFF I GET TO DO IN CLASS, LIKE TRENCH WARFARE ACTIVITIES WHERE THE KIDS THROW STUFF AT EACH OTHER.

IMMIGRATION ROLE PLAY TO HELPING MENTORING OTHER HISTORY TEACHERS.

I JUST KIND OF DO A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING WITH IT AND I WAS HONORED TO BE ABLE TO RECEIVE IT.

I RECEIVED IT BACK IN MARCH AND I HAD TO GIVE A REALLY BIG LONG SPEECH IN FRONT OF LIKE 1000, 2000 PEOPLE, WHICH TERRIFIED ME.

BUT IT WAS REALLY FUN.

AND I JUST I LOVE TEACHING HISTORY.

I LOVE TEACHING WORLD HISTORY, AMERICAN HISTORY.

AND I THINK THAT MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, I'LL INFLUENCE ONE KID TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE THAN WE CURRENTLY HAVE IT AND BY LEARNING ABOUT THE PAST [APPLAUSE].

AND THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ON HOW THESE BOOKS ARE PURCHASED AND REVIEWED IN OUR LIBRARIES.

WE ALL KNOW THAT THE BOOKS ARE PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN CHILD'S DEVELOPMENT.

THEY TEACH US HOW THE WORLD AROUND US IS TO EXPAND OUR IMAGINATIONS AND HELP US GROW INTO A WELL ROUNDED INDIVIDUAL.

HOWEVER, WHEN YOU INTRODUCE THESE SEXUALLY EXPLICIT CONTENT AND INTRODUCE INTO A CHILD'S LIFE THROUGH BOOKS, IT CAN BE NEGATIVE AND LONG LASTING EFFECTS ON THEIR EMOTIONAL PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING.

AS A COMMUNITY AND AS A SCHOOL BOARD, YOU GUYS HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN FROM EXPOSURE OF THIS INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT.

WE NEED TO ENSURE THAT OUR LIBRARIES ARE PROVIDING AGE APPROPRIATE MATERIALS AND THAT PARENTS ARE INFORMED ABOUT THE CONTENT OF THESE BOOKS THROUGH THEIR CHILDREN AND BORROWING THEM AND AUTOMATICALLY OPTED IN AND NOT HAVING TO SEARCH ONLINE TO GO GET OPTED IN.

THERE SHOULD BE AN AUTOMATIC OPT IN TO GET A RECEIPT THAT YOUR KID, WHICH I'VE DONE AND IT WORKS GREAT SO YOU KNOW THE SYSTEM WORKS BUT TO FIND THIS I HAD TO DO AN INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO TO SHOW HOW PARENTS CAN FIND THE OPT IN THAT'S GOING TO GET THEIR RECEIPT.

DAUGHERTY. I'M HERE TO SHARE SOME INFORMATION REGARDING GRADUATIONS FOR THE CLASS OF 2023, WHICH, AS YOU GUYS ALL KNOW, WE DID JUST COMPLETE.

THEY WERE HELD DURING THE WEEK OF MAY 22ND AT VIRGINIA STATE AND VCU, AND WE WERE ABLE TO CELEBRATE OVER 4500 STUDENTS GRADUATING THROUGH CHESTERFIELD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

SOME OF OUR STUDENTS HAD ALREADY ENTERED THE WORKFORCE OR HAD ENTERED THE MILITARY, SO THEREFORE WE ONLY HAD 4427 STUDENTS CROSSED THE STAGE.

AND I KNOW PROBABLY DR. DAUGHERTY AND SOME OF Y'ALL'S ARMS FELT EVERY ONE OF THOSE HANDSHAKES.

SO WE APPRECIATE THAT.

WE HAVE CLASS SENIOR CLASS SIZES RANGING FROM 614 AT THOMAS DALE TO 93 AT CARVER WITH ABOUT AN AVERAGE CLASS SIZE OF A 434.

SO THEY REALLY ARE A TREMENDOUS GROUP OF KIDS CROSSING THOSE STAGES THERE.

I'LL BE HONEST, THIS PICTURE JUST BRINGS ME SUCH JOY BECAUSE IT'S JUST THIS IS WHAT I LOVE ABOUT GRADUATIONS, THE EXCITEMENT YOU SEE IN FAMILIES FACES AND IN CHILDREN'S FACES.

YOU KNOW, AND I KNOW SOME OF THOSE PARENTS WHO FELT THAT WERE SOME OF OUR PARENTS WHO HAD STUDENTS WHO WERE ABLE TO ACHIEVE THE GED, BECAUSE I KNOW SOMETIMES STUDENTS STRUGGLE AND THAT'S THE CHOICES THEY MAKE. AND SO STEPHEN HACKETT AND HIS TEAM HELPED 39 OF OUR STUDENTS EARN THAT GED THIS YEAR.

AND THEY CROSSED MANY OF THEM CROSSED THAT STAGE WHEN THEY WERE AT CARVER.

ADDITIONALLY, REBECCA HARMON'S TEAM WITH ADULT EDUCATION, THEY'VE WORKED WITH OVER 60 ADULT LEARNERS IN ORDER TO EARN THEIRS THIS YEAR.

SO REALLY WE'VE HAD ALMOST 100 STUDENTS, ADULTS AND SENIORS WHO'VE BEEN ABLE TO EARN THEIR GEDS.

THEREFORE, BEING ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH SOME DIPLOMAS AND SOME SKILL SETS THAT WILL HELP THEM MOVING FORWARD AS CITIZENS, WHICH I THINK IS GREAT.

AND FOR THEIR JOB SEARCHES.

THIS ESSENTIALLY PUTS US PRETTY MUCH WHAT WE WOULD SAY IN MIDDLE OF THE PACK.

IT DOESN'T PUT US HIGHER THAN OTHER SCHOOL DIVISIONS.

IT PUTS US REALLY VERY COMPETITIVELY WITH THE LOCAL REGIONS, WHICH WE'RE MOST LIKELY ALIGNED TO, AS WELL AS THE LARGER, LARGER SCHOOL DIVISIONS.

CERTAINLY IT'S A LOT TO KIND OF TAKE IN.

THE PACKET DIDN'T COME TO YOU UNTIL LATE TODAY AND WE APOLOGIZE FOR THAT.

IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? MADAM CLERK, WOULD YOU PLEASE READ THE RESOLUTION? SCHOOL BOARD COMPENSATION RESOLUTION, WHEREAS THE SCHOOL BOARD SALARIES ARE ESTABLISHED PURSUANT TO SUBSECTION 2.1, -32 OF THE CODE OF VIRGINIA.

AND WHEREAS, THE CURRENT SALARY FOR THE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD OF CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA, IS $17,549.28 FOR A MEMBER IN $19,549.28 FOR THE CHAIR.

AND. WHEREAS, IN 2002, THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY INCREASED THE AMOUNT OF ADDITIONAL SALARY PAID TO THE CHAIR TO A MAXIMUM OF 2000 OVER THE REGULAR SALARY OF A REMAINING BOARD MEMBER.

AND. WHEREAS, A NEW TERM FOR THE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD OF CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA, WILL BEGIN JANUARY 1ST, 2024, AND WILL END ON DECEMBER 31ST, 2027.

AND WHEREAS, THE RESPONSIBILITY AND TIME COMMITMENT REQUIRED OF ALL SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS IS QUITE EXTENSIVE.

AND NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE FOLLOWING SALARY IS HEREBY APPROVED FOR THE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD OF CHESTERFIELD, VIRGINIA, WHICH SHALL BECOME EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1ST, 2024 JANUARY 2024.

BOARD CHAIR $30,000.

JANUARY 2024 BOARD MEMBER $28,000.

NEXT, WE HAVE THIS EVENING'S SUPERINTENDENT'S REMARKS.

DR. DAUGHTERY. THANK YOU, MADAM CHAIR.

LAST WEEK, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE ADULT EDUCATION GRADUATIONS, AND IT IS AMAZING WHAT THE STAFF DOES IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY.

YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, IT'S A LEADER IN THE REGION FOR THE REGISTRATION AND GRADUATES FOR ADULTS.

AND SOMETIMES WE FORGET THAT LIFE DOESN'T END JUST BECAUSE YOU LEAVE HIGH SCHOOL.

AND THERE ARE TIMES THAT LIFE OCCURS AND YOU HAVE TO CONTINUE AND YOU WANT TO COME BACK.

BECAUSE I BELIEVE THE HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENCY IS FAR MORE MEANINGFUL TODAY THAN IT WAS 20 YEARS AGO BECAUSE IT OPENS SO MANY DOORS.

WE TYPICALLY IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY HAVE THE SAME NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN ADULT EDUCATION AND GRADUATES AS HENRICO, RICHMOND, HANOVER, GOOCHLAND, PALATINE, NEW KENT AND CHARLES CITY DO COMBINED.

SO HERE ARE SOME JUST SOME AMAZING NUMBERS.

THIS YEAR WE HAD ADULT WORKERS AND IN CONTINUING EDUCATION, ALMOST 1000 STUDENTS, 982, WE HAD 834 ADULT ESL LEARNERS.

WE HAD 266 GED ADULT LEARNERS, PLUS WE HAD 76 STUDENTS THAT WERE IN THE CHESTERFIELD COUNTY JAIL THAT WE WORKED WITH.

WE HAD OVER 2000 ADULTS BASICALLY THAT WE ALSO EDUCATED.

WHEN YOU JUST THINK ABOUT AS WE EDUCATE OVER ALMOST 65,000 STUDENTS EVERY DAY, THERE'S ANOTHER 2000 INDIVIDUALS THAT WE ARE HELPING BETTER THEIR LIFE AS WELL. SO I JUST WANTED TO TELL THE ADULT EDUCATION TEAM AND REBECCA HARMAN AND HER TEAM WHAT A GREAT JOB THEY DO WORKING IN CCPS FOR THE ADULT LEARNERS THAT WE ONLY THINK IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO GROW BECAUSE OF THE SUCCESS THEY'RE HAVING.
