FIRST, WE'RE GOING TO START WITH OUR CHESTERFIELD RECOVERY ACADEMY UPDATE WITH MR.

MERRIMAN. I'M GOING TO FLIP THINGS AROUND A LITTLE BIT.

GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE.

I AM JUSTIN SAVOY, THE PROGRAM COORDINATOR FOR CHESTERFIELD RECOVERY ACADEMY, AND I'M HERE TO PROVIDE THE UPDATES ON OUR PROGRAM FOR OUR FIRST YEAR.

OUR PROGRAM IS FUNDED THROUGH LEGISLATION APPROVED BY THE VIRGINIA ASSEMBLY BACK IN JUNE OF 2022.

WE FORMALLY OPENED ON AUGUST 2ND, 2022, AND OUR FIRST DAY WAS SEPTEMBER THE 8TH, 2022.

SO AS YOU CAN TELL, WE HAVE BEEN ROLLING.

FOR OUR ENROLLMENT ENGAGEMENT ALL HIGH SCHOOLS IN OUR DISTRICT WITHIN OUR REGION HAVE BEEN CONTACTED.

THEY RECEIVED PHYSICAL AND EMAILS ABOUT OUR PROGRAM.

I HAVE MET WITH PRINCIPALS AND DISTRICT DIRECTORS AND ALSO THE CSBS WITHIN OUR REGION TO EXPRESS INTEREST IN OUR PROGRAM.

CURRENTLY WE HAVE 12 STUDENTS ENROLLED, TEN FROM WITHIN THE DISTRICT, TWO FROM HENRICO.

GRADES 9 THROUGH 12.

FOR COUNTY REPRESENTATION OVER THE YEAR WE'VE HAD CHESTERFIELD, HENRICO AND COLONIAL HEIGHTS.

OUR COLONIAL HEIGHTS STUDENTS HAD TO RETURN BACK HOME TO THEIR DISTRICT FOR FAMILY REASONS.

FOR STAFFING. CURRENTLY IT'S MYSELF, THE COORDINATOR.

WE HAVE THREE CLINICIANS, OUR SENIOR CLINICIAN AND TWO CLINICIAN ONES.

WE HAVE NOW TWO ACADEMIC FACILITATORS AND OUR OFFICE MANAGER.

AND WE'LL SOON BE HIRING AN INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE AS WELL.

FOR OUR COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AS YOU KNOW, OUR BIGGEST PARTNER IS THE CHESTERFIELD MENTAL HEALTH AND SUPPORT SERVICES.

THEY PROVIDE OUR CLINICAL GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT TO OUR CLINICIANS TO HELP HIRE AND PROVIDE THE CLINICAL SUPPORT THAT THEY NEED FOR OUR PROGRAM AND THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT AND GROUP COUNSELING. OVERALL, WE RECEIVED $28,500 IN DONATIONS FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND ORGANIZATIONS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, WHICH HAS BEEN EXTREMELY HELPFUL FOR OUR PROGRAM.

WE HAVE WORKED WITH ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS THE WOODLAKE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, BOYS TO MEN, WHO PROVIDES AN ALL INCLUSIVE SUPPORT GROUP EVERY WEEK, AND ALSO TO END THE STIGMA FOUNDATION, WHICH HAS PERSONALLY DONATED $4,500 TOWARDS OUR PROGRAM.

FOR OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

SO WITHIN ONE SCHOOL YEAR, WE HAVE 37 MONTHS OF SOBRIETY, WHICH IS HUGE FOR OUR STUDENTS BECAUSE A LOT OF THEM START THEIR JOURNEY TO RECOVERY WHEN THEY FIRST COME TO US. THEY HAVE COMBINED IT'S OVER 250 HOURS OF SUPPORT GIVEN TO THEM, 170 HOURS FOR INDIVIDUAL AND 80 HOURS PER GROUP, 40 CREDIT HOURS THEY HAVE EARNED FROM ENGLISH AND SCIENCE.

SOME OF OUR KIDS HAVE TAKEN TRIGONOMETRY AND PHYSICS.

AS YOU ALREADY KNOW, THOSE COURSES ARE HARD IN GENERAL, AND THEN YOU ADD ON RECOVERY AS WELL.

SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE CELEBRATED.

THE EOC VERIFIED CREDITS THEY RECEIVED AND OUR STUDENTS, FIVE OF THEM, HAVE EITHER STARTED A FIRST TIME JOB OR REENTERED THE FIELD, THE WORKFORCE, WHICH IS HUGE FOR THEM BECAUSE WHEN THEY'RE ON THEIR JOURNEY TO RECOVERY, THEY HAVE LOST THAT RESPECT TO THAT TRUST WITH THEIR FAMILY OR COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

AND NOW TO ACTUALLY BUILD THAT TRUST BACK AND THEY'RE ALLOWED BACK INTO THE WORKFORCE.

ON MAY 18TH, WE HAD OUR FIRST COMPLETION CEREMONY WHERE OUR STUDENTS WERE RECOGNIZED.

WE HAD TWO TERM GRADUATES AND OUR STUDENTS WERE RECOGNIZED FOR BEING IN THE PROGRAM.

I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE PARENTS FOR ALLOWING THEIR STUDENTS TO HELP ADVOCATE FOR RECOVERY WITHIN THE DISTRICT AND OUR PROGRAM.

THIS HELPS TO ERASE THE STIGMA ABOUT YOUTH, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, NOT ONLY WITHIN OUR REGION, WITHIN OUR STATE, BECAUSE IT'S A HUGE ISSUE THAT'S GOING ON.

I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THOSE PARENTS AND THE FAMILY MEMBERS AS WELL.

ALSO WITH THE PROGRAM AND ACHIEVEMENT, I WAS SELECTED TO BE PART OF THE MEMBERS FOR THE GOVERNOR'S RIGHT HELP RIGHT NOW PLAN IS THE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PLAN TO ADDRESS SUBSTANCE ABUSE ISSUES WITHIN THE STATE, HELP SUPPORT THE EXPANSION OF RECOVERY HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE STATE AS WELL.

WE WERE SELECTED AS THE VIRGINIA SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION 2023 SHOWCASES FOR SUCCESS SPECIAL EDITION, THE 2023 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, AND WE HAVE BEEN FEATURED ON SCRIPTS TV, WHICH IS A NATIONAL TELEVISION STATION.

THAT'S ME WITH THE GOVERNOR.

I WAS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE WHERE HE SIGNED EXECUTIVE ORDERS TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES WITHIN THE STATE.

FOR COMPLETED EVENTS WE HAD OUR STUDENT SAFETY EVENTS AND THIS LAST DECEMBER AND HELPED THEM TO CREATE POSITIVE PLANS FOR BEING ON WINTER BREAK.

HOW TO MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES WHILE BEING OUT OF SCHOOL.

OUR END OF THE YEAR CEREMONY TO BE HELD ON MAY 18TH TO CELEBRATE OUR COMPLETION CEREMONY AND OUR STUDENTS AND SENIORS.

FUTURE EVENTS WE HAVE COMING UP, I WILL BE PRESENTING AT THE VIRGINIA SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE ON JULY 13TH ABOUT OUR PROGRAM.

AND THEN ALSO I WAS INVITED TO DO A WEBINAR TO POLICY MAKERS FOR THE OPIOID ABATEMENT AUTHORITY, AND THAT WILL BE IN SEPTEMBER.

OUR FUTURE GOALS EXPANSION.

WE'RE LOOKING AT 25 KIDS BY MAY 2024, WHICH I FEEL LIKE WE WILL REACH THAT BEFORE THEN.

MY SECOND GOAL IS TO HAVE STUDENT REPRESENTATION FROM 25% OF OUR REGION AND THEN PROGRAM RECOGNITION.

WE ARE LOOKING AT STARTING THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS IN SPRING OF 2024 AND CONTINUED GROWTH OF PARTNERSHIPS THROUGHOUT OUR REGION.

AND THEN IT'S COMPLETE.

THE SUBSTANCE ABUSE FREE ENVIRONMENT.

AND I DID NOT REALIZE THE HIGH PERCENTAGE OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE CONNECTED TO UNDIAGNOSED UNTREATED ADHD, WHICH THE PHYSICIANS SAID 70% OF THEIR PATIENTS THERE FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE HAD UNDIAGNOSED UNTREATED ADHD.

SO I WAS CURIOUS, SINCE YOU WORK SO COLLABORATIVELY WITH THE COMMUNITY SERVICES BOARD, IF THERE IS A WAY TO YOU KNOW, BECAUSE IT RUNS IN FAMILIES, YOU'RE WORKING WITH FAMILIES, THERE ARE OTHER KIDS AND FAMILIES DO IF THERE'S, YOU KNOW, IN THE FUTURE SOME KIND OF PUBLIC HEALTH CAMPAIGN TO HELP PEOPLE UNDERSTAND.

AND THE PREVENTION PIECE.

RIGHT. I MEAN, OBVIOUSLY, PREVENTION IS HARDER AND PREVENTION DOESN'T HELP THE KIDDOS WHO HAVE ALREADY WALKED THIS PATH.

BUT HOW DO WE IN TERMS OF ENDING THE STIGMA, GET THE INFORMATION OUT THERE THAT TRAITS THAT I THINK HAVE BEEN MISSED? YOU KNOW, THAT'S JUST THE KID THAT CAN'T SIT DOWN THEN, YOU KNOW, LEADS THAT'S JUST THE IMPULSIVE KID THAT THOSE KIDS ACTUALLY ARE VERY PRONE TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE.

I'M CURIOUS IF YOU'VE HAD ANY CONVERSATION.

I KNOW THAT'S REALLY THE COUNTY, BUT IF YOU HAVE ANY CONVERSATION ABOUT, YOU KNOW, THE PREVENTION PIECE, GIVEN YOUR ACCESS TO FAMILIES AND EVEN THE BROADER COMMUNITY, MAYBE IT'S A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE COUNTY TO DO SOME KIND OF PREVENTION PUBLIC SERVICE THING.

OKAY. WELL, I'VE HAD A COUPLE OF CONVERSATIONS.

ONE WAS WITH THE RIGHT HELP, RIGHT NOW PLAN ABOUT HOW TO EXPLAIN TO THE COMMUNITY ACROSS THE STATE ABOUT THE STIGMA OF ADULT ABUSE, DEALING WITH CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS AND HOW TO ADDRESS THAT.

ALSO WITH THE CSB LOOKING AT DOING LIKE FAMILY PROGRAMS, FINALLY FAMILY GROUPS AND EXPANDING THE WORD.

SOMETIMES IT'S JUST ACTUALLY JUST GOING FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL, JUST EXPLAINING THE ISSUE THAT'S BEING PRESENT AND IDENTIFYING THOSE FACTORS.

SO WE'VE HAD THOSE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT HOW TO ADDRESS IT.

IT'S A LARGE CONVERSATION AND HAS TO BE ADDRESSED AND BROKEN DOWN BASICALLY BY REGION AND HOW TO SPEAK TO THOSE PEOPLE.

WELL, I'M GLAD YOU'RE STARTING IT ALREADY.

THAT MAKES ME FEEL BETTER.

SO THEY'RE WORKING RIGHT NOW GETTING THE COUNTY AND THE STATE MEMBERS INVOLVED.

SO WE'LL BE COMING BACK TO SHARE WITH EACH MAGISTERIAL DISTRICT.

THEY'RE LOOKING AT SITES BRINGING PARENTS IN TO HELP THEM UNDERSTAND THE ISSUES THAT ARE GOING ON RIGHT NOW.

SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON.

REALLY AT THE CENTER OF MY QUESTION IS HOW CAN WE SUPPORT THAT EXPANSION PLAN? BUT WHAT ARE YOUR HOW ARE YOU WHAT STEPS ARE YOU LOOKING TO TAKE TO REACH THOSE GOALS OF 13 ADDITIONAL STUDENTS? IF RIGHT, YOU'VE GOT 12.

SO EXPANDING REGIONALLY, CLEARLY THERE ARE OTHER DIVISIONS THAT ARE OPEN AND RECEPTIVE TO THE COLLABORATION. HOW WHAT CAN WE DO TO DRAW MORE REGIONALITY TO THE PROGRAM? WELL, FOR ON YOUR BEHALF, THE BEST THING TO DO IS SPEAK TO YOUR OTHER BOARD MEMBERS AS THEY'RE PARTNERS WITH US.

A LOT OF ISSUES THAT SOMETIMES WHEN THEY HEAR CHESTERFIELD RECOVERY ACADEMY, THEY FORGET THAT THEY ARE PART OF OUR REGION AND THEY CAN ACTUALLY SEND THEIR STUDENTS TO US.

SO THIS SCHOOL YEAR, NOW THAT WE EXPANDED, OUR STAFF, ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO GET OUT AND ACTUALLY GO TO THE OTHER DISTRICTS, ESPECIALLY LIKE RICHMOND CITY AND PETERSBURG, AND EXPLAIN TO THEM ABOUT OUR PARTNERSHIP AND OUR ENROLLMENT PROCESS.

IT'S A PLEASURE TO BE HERE AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR AND TALK ABOUT SOME THINGS WE'VE ACCOMPLISHED AND WHERE WE'RE HEADED IN THE FUTURE.

MR. CARSON IS ON A WELL NEEDED VACATION WITH HIS FAMILY, SO I'M GOING TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT A LOT OF THE MAJOR MAINTENANCE WORK THAT HE MIGHT TYPICALLY COVER WITH YOU.

AND I HOPE I CAN RECALL THE DETAILS AS WELL AS HE DOES.

AND THEN WE HAVE MR. JOHN THUMMA WHO LEADS OUR FACILITIES DEPARTMENT, AND HE GIVES THEM AN ANNUAL CHECKUP WITH YOU.

AND AGAIN, HE WANTS TO SHOW YOU HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND TALK ABOUT SOME DIRECTIONS FOR THE FUTURE.

WE'VE GOT A LOT OF SLIDES AND A LOT OF PICTURES, SO I'LL TRY TO BE RATHER BRISK AS I GO THROUGH THIS.

BUT IF YOU NEED ME TO SLOW DOWN, I WILL CERTAINLY DO SO.

WE SHOW YOU THIS CHART FROM TIME TO TIME IN REGARDS TO WHAT WE'VE BEEN SPENDING ON MAJOR MAINTENANCE, AND IT'S BEEN AT A VERY HEALTHY CLIP, ESPECIALLY IN THE PREVIOUS TWO FISCAL YEARS. WE AREN'T QUITE TO THAT $28 MILLION DOLLARS YET, BUT I DO UNDERSTAND THERE ARE SEVERAL MILLION DOLLARS ENCUMBERED, AND I'M GOING TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT SOME OF THOSE PROJECTS THAT HAVE VERY LARGE PRICE TAGS IN THEM.

SO WE ARE DEFINITELY SPENDING THE MONEY THAT THE COUNTY AND THE STATE AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS GIVEN TO US WISELY TO DO A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF VERY GOOD WORK. I'VE SHOWN YOU THESE THREE BUCKETS BEFORE THAT DESCRIBE THE MAJOR MAINTENANCE WORK AND THEIR ORIGINS.

THE FIRST AND MR. THUMMA IS GOING TO TALK TO YOU SOME MORE ABOUT PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE.

THIS BOARD HAS TAKEN GREAT STRIDES IN THE LAST YEAR TO FUND THOSE PROGRAMS, AND IT ENABLES US TO IDENTIFY SOME OF THESE ISSUES THAT WE MIGHT HAVE WITH CORE SYSTEMS. AND THOSE ISSUES COME TO THE FOREFRONT BEFORE WHAT WE MIGHT CONSIDER THE END OF USEFUL LIFE.

WE TRACK THEM CLOSELY IN OUR WORK ORDER SYSTEM.

AND IF WE HAVE A REPAIR JOB OR A REPLACEMENT THAT'S GREATER THAN $50,000, IT FALLS UNDER THE MANAGEMENT OF OF MR. CARSON'S SIDE. AND WE CALL IT A MAJOR MAINTENANCE PROJECT.

MANY SUPERINTENDENT INITIATIVES, WE WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH DR.

DAUGHERTY AND COME UP WITH MANY SPECIAL, UNIQUE PROJECTS THAT ADDRESS A NEED THAT HAS COME UP FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

AND THE FUNDING METHOD MIGHT VARY AND THE BUDGETS CAN VARY FROM YEAR TO YEAR.

BUT WE'RE DEFINITELY GOING TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT SOME OF THOSE PROJECTS WHICH FALL INTO THE CATEGORY, SUCH AS MEGA TRAILERS AND VESTIBULES AND LOCKER PODS AND VERY GOOD WORK.

FACILITY CONDITION ASSESSMENTS.

THAT ALSO COMES FROM JOHN'S SIDE, THE WORK THAT STARTED BACK IN ABOUT 2018 TO LOOK AT THE ENTIRE INFRASTRUCTURE AND IDENTIFY WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET TO THE END OF USEFUL LIFE FOR OUR MAJOR SYSTEMS THAT ARE COMPOSED, OUR BUILDINGS.

SO WE WANT TO, IN A DELIBERATE WAY AS WE SEE THE NEED FOR REPLACEMENTS COME UP, BE PREPARED TO REPLACE THOSE SYSTEMS AND WE HAVE A GOOD GRIP ON THOSE. IT DOES HELP THAT WE'VE RECEIVED ADDITIONAL FUNDING AND WE CERTAINLY HAVEN'T CAUGHT UP, BUT WE ARE MAKING GOOD PROGRESS IN THOSE FCAS ARE PROVIDING US VERY GOOD INFORMATION.

AND JOHN'S GOING TO TALK TO YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT A NEW SYSTEM THAT WE'VE PROCURED THAT'S GOING TO HELP US ANALYZE THAT INFORMATION MUCH BETTER AND MAKE THE BEST CHOICES FOR

MAJOR MAINTENANCE. SO WHAT ARE SOME OF OUR RECENT EFFORTS? HERE'S A SERIES OF SLIDES ON WHAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON.

STRUCTURAL AND VERTICAL ENVELOPE ISN'T NECESSARILY A HIGHLY VISIBLE THING, BUT IT'S KIND OF WHEN THINGS ARE STARTING TO SHOW CRACKS, LITERALLY SHOW CRACKS.

WE DID SOME RECENT WORK THAT YOU SEE AT THOMAS DALE WEST.

YOU MIGHT BE FAMILIAR WITH THE RAMP THAT LEADS UP TO THE DOOR IN THE REAR OF THE BUILDING THAT RECEIVES SOME CONSIDERABLE STRUCTURAL REPAIR.

AND NOW WE'RE MOVING ON TO DO SOME SIMILAR WORK AT LC BIRD, CARVER CAREER ACADEMY, AND MON ACAN.

WE'RE SPENDING JUST A LITTLE UNDER $1 MILLION DOLLARS TO HOPEFULLY GET THIS WORK DONE BY THIS FALL.

HERE'S A SPECIAL PROJECT.

MS. HAINES AND I HAVE TALKED A LOT ABOUT THIS ONE AND WITH THE WHOLE BOARD HAS CERTAINLY SUPPORTED IT AND IT CAME WITH ESSER FUNDING TO USE THE ULTRAVIOLET GERMICIDAL IRRADIATION IN SOME OF OUR SCHOOLS THAT HAD HVAC SYSTEMS THAT WEREN'T DESIGNED QUITE UP TO OUR CURRENT STANDARDS THAT ASHRAE HAS IN PLACE. SO THEY ARE IN PLACE AND THEY'RE WORKING AND THEY'RE GOING TO BE EFFECTIVE AND THEY WILL HELP US HAVE CONTINUED AIR QUALITY AND PURIFICATION AT OUR LOCATIONS THAT NEED IT THE MOST.

HERE'S A BIG PROJECT THAT YOU APPROVED RECENTLY.

A HIGH SCHOOL HAS A VERY LARGE HVAC SYSTEM.

YOU CAN THINK ABOUT OVER 200,000FT² WITH A GYM AND AN AUDITORIUM AND LARGE SPACES.

JAMES RIVER HIGH IS THE ONE THAT IS WELL UNDERWAY.

I'VE BEEN OUT TO THIS JOB SITE TOO.

THEY STARTED HERE IN THE SPRING, REPLACING WHAT ARE CALLED THE VAV BOXES, WHICH ARE BASICALLY OVER EVERY CLASSROOM AND CONTROL THE FLOW OF THE AIR.

AND THEY'VE BEEN KNOCKING OUT 2 OR 3 OF THOSE EVERY NIGHT AND THERE'S OVER 100 IN THE BUILDING.

AND NOW WE'RE SWINGING INTO THE PORTION WHERE WE'RE ACTUALLY GOING TO REPLACE, I THINK IT'S 18 ROOFTOP UNITS THIS SUMMER.

SO THE CRANE IS GOING TO BE LIFTING AND VERY BUSY AT JAMES RIVER HIGH.

BUT THIS SHOWS YOU THE MAGNITUDE OF WHAT WE NEED TO SPEND JUST AT ONE HIGH SCHOOL AN $8 MILLION DOLLAR PROJECT.

IT'S GOING TO BE, AGAIN, QUITE AN EFFORT THIS SUMMER.

WE'RE LOOKING CLOSELY AT IT AND JOHN'S TEAM IS GOING TO HELP US MAKE SURE THAT IT'S RIGHT AT THE END BY DOING SOME COMMISSIONING.

BUT IT'S A NEEDED PROJECT AND VERY IMPORTANT AND WE'RE GLAD TO BE ABLE TO GET IT DONE THIS FALL.

ROOF RESTORATION.

WE'VE TALKED TO YOU SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT BUNDLES OF ROOF PROJECTS AND WE FINALLY CAME UP WITH A STRATEGY THAT'S ENABLED US TO REALLY GET TO WORK.

AND I'M GOING TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT ROOF RESTORATION AS ONE TECHNIQUE THAT WE USE IN ROOF RECONSTRUCTION.

THIS RESTORATION IS A MORE ECONOMICAL METHOD IN TERMS OF TAKING CARE OF A ROOF THAT DOESN'T NEED TO BE TOTALLY REPLACED OR RECONSTRUCTED. AND SO WE'RE AGAIN, SPENDING SIGNIFICANT MONEY, $3.5 MILLION DOLLARS AT CHALKELY, EVERGREEN, AND MEADOWBROOK HIGH.

AND I'VE BEEN UP ON THE ROOF WITH OUR PM TO LOOK AT THIS BEFORE AND THEY'VE MADE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF PROGRESS IN THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS AND FINISHING UP HERE IN THE SPRING WITH THOSE THREE JOBS.

AND BUT THAT DOES INVOLVE, YOU KNOW, THERE'S A LITTLE RECOATING AFTER YOU'VE TAKEN OUT OLD WET INSULATION WITH A TWO PART REINFORCED LIQUID SYSTEM THAT'S TRIED, TESTED AND WILL LAST FOR 25 YEARS.

BUT IT'S SOME OF THOSE SAME SCHOOLS.

WE ARE ALSO DOING SOME RECONSTRUCTION.

AND ONE OF THE TECHNIQUES THAT IS SHOWN HERE IN THESE GRAPHS, IT'S A BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF THE ROOF.

THE RED SECTIONS ARE THE WORST ONES AND THAT'S WHAT REALLY NEEDS THE RECONSTRUCTION.

THE YELLOW SECTIONS ARE SECTIONS THAT WE COULD RESTORE.

SO BOTH AT CHALKELY AND AT MEADOWBROOK, WE HAVE TWO MAJOR JOBS THE RESTORATION AND THE RECONSTRUCTION.

THIS IS GOING TO TAKE A LITTLE LONGER, BUT WE'RE STARTING HARD ALREADY AT MEADOWBROOK, BUT AN SOME OF THE WORK MIGHT ACTUALLY LAST UNTIL NEXT SUMMER.

BUT AGAIN, ANOTHER LARGE NUMBER, $9 MILLION DOLLARS HERE JUST ON A COUPLE OF SCHOOLS.

SO AS OUR SCHOOLS CONTINUE TO AGE AND YOU THINK ABOUT HOW MANY WE HAVE, THAT SHOWS THE MAGNITUDE OF THE WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

AND WE'RE GLAD THAT THIS IS FINALLY GETTING DONE.

YOU KNOW, WE WAITED A WHILE BEFORE WE COULD FIND CONTRACTORS AND THE PRICES KEPT GOING UP AND WE NEEDED TO GET TO WORK.

AND WE ARE WORKING.

COMING BACK TO SOME INITIATIVES, ENTRANCE VESTIBULES, SEVERAL PHASES OF THIS.

THESE ARE THE FIVE THAT WE'VE ALREADY COMPLETED THAT STARTED BACK IN THE WINTER BREAK AND CAME THROUGH SPRING BREAK.

THEY LOOK REALLY GOOD AT SEVERAL OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS AND TWO OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND THESE ARE ESSENTIALLY DONE JUST A COUPLE OF FINAL LITTLE PUNCH LIST ITEMS THAT ARE LEFT.

BUT WE WANT TO DO THIS AT MANY OTHER PLACES.

AND THAT'S WHAT THESE SYSTEMS ARE DOING.

WE ARE WE'VE HAD SOME SLIGHT DELAYS IN REGARDS TO GETTING CONTRACTORS WILLING TO DO THIS WORK.

SO WE'VE HAD SOME DIFFERENT STRATEGIES OF EITHER BUNDLING OR UNBUNDLING THEM.

AND SO THIS IS A QUOTE UNQUOTE BACK AT PROCUREMENT.

BUT WE ARE EXPECTING TO GET SOME VENDORS SIGNED UP TO CONTINUE THIS WORK THIS SUMMER.

BUT THIS WORK WILL STRETCH OVER THE NEXT TWO SUMMERS, FALL OF 2024 TO COMPLETE IT, BUT IT WILL BE A SIGNIFICANT UPGRADE AT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THESE SCHOOLS IN REGARDS TO THEIR SAFETY AND SECURITY POSTURE.

LOCKER POD CONVERSIONS, WE DID THIS THREE YEARS AGO WITH SEVERAL OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS WITH SUCCESS IN REGARDS TO ADDING CAPACITY THAT WE NEED.

TWO MIDDLE SCHOOLS WERE IDENTIFIED THAT HAD THE LOCKER PODS.

WE'RE GETTING NINE CLASSROOMS IN EACH OF THESE SCHOOLS AS A RESULT OF TAKING THESE OUT.

AND I WENT OUT DURING SPRING BREAK.

THIS IS A PHOTO THAT LOOKS VERY FAMILIAR TO ME AT BAILEY BRIDGE.

THOSE LOCKER PODS WERE DEFINITELY INTO THE CONCRETE.

AND IT WAS IT WAS A JOB TO REMOVE THEM.

AND BUT IT'S UNDERWAY AND WE'VE GOT GOOD FOLKS THAT HAVE DONE THIS WORK BEFORE US AND WE'VE MANAGED IT BEFORE.

SO WE'RE GOING TO HAVE ADDITIONAL CAPACITY THAT'S REALLY NEEDED AT THOSE TWO MIDDLE SCHOOLS, BOTH ELIZABETH DAVIS AND TOMAHAWK CREEK, BY THE END OF THIS SUMMER.

MEGA TRAILERS. WE CONTINUE TO NEED THESE TO PROVIDE SAFER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.

WE ARE ADDING ONE AT MOSELEY.

WE ANTICIPATED THAT WHEN WE OPENED IT LESS THAN 12 MONTHS AGO.

SO WE PLANNED FOR THAT IN THE CONSTRUCTION IN REGARDS TO THE UTILITY STUBS.

THIS UNIT IS IN PLACE AND ALMOST READY FOR OCCUPANCY NOW.

THE HOPKINS ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS ONE THAT HAD 15 INDIVIDUAL TRAILERS SPREAD OUT OVER DIFFERENT AREAS.

WE OBTAINED SOME ADDITIONAL LAND TO GIVE US A LITTLE MORE ELBOW ROOM.

AND WE'VE GOT REALLY AN ELEGANT SOLUTION WITH TWO EIGHT CLASSROOM MEGA TRAILERS.

THE PRINCIPAL AND STAFF ARE VERY EXCITED THERE WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A SAFER ENVIRONMENT FOR THOSE STUDENTS AND THEY WILL BE THEY'RE GOING TO LEARN BETTER BECAUSE THEY'RE IN A BETTER SPOT. AND JOHN'S ACTUALLY GOING TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT HOW GOOD FACILITIES LEADS TO BETTER STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.

SO I THINK THESE ARE VERY GOOD PROJECTS.

YOU KNOW, THEY'RE IN OTHER PLACES AND WE'RE ALWAYS THINKING TO THE NEXT SUMMER ABOUT WHERE WE MIGHT MOVE SOME FOR EXAMPLE WHEN THE FALLING CREEK PROJECTS DONE.

SYNTHETIC TURF FIELDS.

THIS ONE'S TAKEN A LITTLE WHILE TO GET STARTED.

WE'VE BEEN CHATTING WITH IT FOR OVER 18 MONTHS, BUT THE WORK IS WELL UNDERWAY.

I'VE BEEN OUT TO BIRD SEVERAL TIMES, MONACAN TWICE.

WE ARE GOING TO OPEN THESE FACILITIES WITH FOOTBALL GAMES IN AUGUST AND VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

AGAIN, PARKS AND REC HAS A MAJOR ROLE IN THIS.

THE COUNTY HAS FUNDED THIS AND HOPEFULLY WE'RE GOING TO LOOK FORWARD TO ADDITIONAL PROJECTS SUCH AS THIS.

BUT LET'S TAKE THESE TWO OFF ACROSS THE FINISH LINE.

I THINK THESE COMMUNITIES ARE GOING TO BE DELIGHTED WITH WHAT THEY HAVE AND IT'LL BE VERY CLEAR TO THE REST OF THE COMMUNITY, YOU KNOW, JUST WHAT THIS CAN DO FOR OUR ATHLETIC PROGRAMS AND FOR THE COUNTY TO HAVE ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS AT THESE SITES.

AND I THINK WE'RE GOING TO SEE MORE IN THE FUTURE AT ADDITIONAL HIGH SCHOOLS.

SOLAR, WE DO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY.

WE'VE TAKEN THE OPPORTUNITY AT SIX OF OUR NEWER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS TO PLACE SOLAR PANELS ON THE ROOF TO PROVIDE AT LEAST 50% OF THE POWER THAT'S NEEDED AT THOSE SCHOOLS. AND WE'RE GOING TO SAVE MONEY OVER THIS POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENT OVER THE NEXT 25 YEARS.

THERE'S, I BELIEVE, A RIBBON CUTTING OF SOME TYPE BEING HELD AT ONE OF THE COUNTY FACILITIES, THE SAFETY AND TRAINING BUILDING THAT THEY HAVE OVER CLOSE TO RIGHT DOWN THE STREET HERE AND I CAN'T RECALL THE EXACT DATE, BUT THAT'S COMING SOON.

BUT WE'RE DOING ACTUALLY MORE SCHOOL BUILDINGS THAN WE HAVE COUNTY BUILDINGS.

AND AND WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT PHASE TWO.

WE DEFINITELY THINK OUR NEW MIDDLE SCHOOLS THAT WE'RE BUILDING ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR THIS.

SO WE'RE STARTING WITH THAT REPLACEMENT CYCLE WORK, WE DO HAVE SOME FUNDING THAT CAN ENABLE US TO GET STARTED, BUT OBVIOUSLY IT'LL TAKE MORE TO DO THE ENTIRE INFRASTRUCTURE.

OVERALL, ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS IN THE NEXT 5 TO 6 YEARS.

AND WHAT'S INTERESTING IS WE WENT TO THIS BOARD AND WE HAD THIS DOCTOR, DR.

HE HAS MY POSITION IN CHESAPEAKE SCHOOLS.

AND HE WAS GIVEN THIS PRESENTATION ON SCHOOL PERFORMANCE AND THE FACTORS THAT IMPACT SCHOOL PERFORMANCE.

AND IT WAS VERY VALIDATING TO US BECAUSE WE WERE FOCUSING ON THE INDOOR AIR QUALITY, PROPER VENTILATION HERE.

WE WERE ALREADY DOING THAT.

AND TO HEAR THAT KIND OF HELPED US UNDERSTAND THAT WE WERE HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND WAS A VERY POSITIVE THING TO HEAR FROM DR.

BAILEY AND DR. BAILEY AND HE HAS SINCE RETIRED, BUT HIM AND I ARE BEGINNING TO WORK AND LOOK AT OTHER THINGS TO HELP VALIDATE HOW A POSITIVE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT CAN HELP IMPROVE PERFORMANCE.

HE ALSO SHOWED THIS SLIDE THAT 13 OUT OF 18 STUDIES SHOWED THAT THERE WAS A DIRECT IMPACT ON THE QUALITY OF THE FACILITIES TO PERFORMANCE A 3 TO 5%.

AND WE WANT TO GET THAT 3 TO 5% FOR OUR STUDENTS.

THAT'S PART OF OUR GOAL.

HERE ARE SOME OF OUR SUCCESSES.

IT'S KIND OF NEAT. WE WENT THERE AND WE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT OUR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM.

OUR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM IS PROBABLY CUTTING EDGE.

I WOULD SAY IT'S NOT REVOLUTIONARY.

IT'S PROBABLY MORE EVOLUTIONARY COMPARED TO OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS THE WAY WE'RE HANDLING THIS, OUR HVAC, BACKFLOW FIRE PROTECTION, ROOFING, ELECTRICAL WATER QUALITY PROGRAM. THAT PROGRAM IS DONE BY THE COUNTY, NOT BY US.

BY RISK MANAGEMENT. AND THAT'S PURPOSEFUL.

WE DON'T WANT TO BE SAYING WHAT WATER QUALITY IS, AND WE WANT THEM TO TELL US AND WHAT THEY TELL US WE REACT UPON.

WITH THE HVAC, ROOFING AND ELECTRICAL, WE ARE GETTING RED, YELLOW, GREEN RESULTS.

WE'RE NOT JUST OUT THERE MAINTAINING THE SYSTEM.

WE JUST GO AHEAD AND SEND THEM OUT.

BUT WE KNOW WHAT IT IS WITH OUR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM.

IT'S MONEY THAT WE KNOW WE NEED TO DO.

WE JUST THE SYSTEMS ARE GETTING OLD, SO WE'RE REPLACING WITH LED LIGHTING AND WE'RE GETTING THE SAVINGS TOO.

AND THEY'VE DEVELOPED A RED, GREEN YELLOW MODEL ON THEIR OWN USING, OF COURSE, GOOGLE, BUT THEY'VE CREATED FOR OUR HVAC A ROOFING AND AN ELECTRICAL A MODEL THAT ANYBODY THAT GOES OUT AND LOOKS AT OUR EQUIPMENT CAN APPLY AND GIVE US A CONDITION.

SO WE GET A STANDARDIZED LOOK ACROSS THE BOARD AND WE HAVE THREE CONTRACTORS THAT ARE DOING THE HVAC.

SO NOW WE KNOW WE GOT 2 OR 3 YEARS OF DATA WHAT THE CONDITION OF OUR FACILITIES ARE FOR HVAC.

WE HAVE A RED, YELLOW, GREEN MAP OF EVERY SINGLE ROOF.

WE'VE DONE A LOT OF INTERVIEWS AND WE SELECTED A NEW MAJOR, A COMPUTERIZED MAJOR MAINTENANCE SYSTEM, MAJOR MAINTENANCE SYSTEM.

THIS SYSTEM WILL BE VERY GRAPHICAL.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, ALL THAT DATA THAT WE'VE GOTTEN FROM OUR PMS WILL BE PUT INTO THIS SYSTEM AND WE'RE GOING TO USE THAT INFORMATION TO BUILD FUTURE FCAS FCAS COSTS $0.08 A SQUARE FOOT.

WE'RE NOT GOING TO NEED TO SPEND THAT $0.08 A SQUARE FOOT BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO HAVE PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT OUR BUILDINGS LOOK LIKE, KNOW HOW OUR BUILDINGS FUNCTION GOING OUT THERE ON A QUARTERLY BASIS.

I ACTUALLY MAXED OUT MY SUB DAYS, SO I'VE BEEN IN SCHOOLS A LOT AND I'M A MOTHER OF TWO KIDS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, SO I AM A STAKEHOLDER SORT OF FROM EVERY ASPECT OF SCHOOL HEALTH.

SO JUST TO START, SHAB HAS HISTORICALLY ALWAYS LOOKED AT EVERYTHING WE DO THROUGH WHAT WE CALL THE EQUITY LENS.

SO TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE WAYS THAT OUR RECOMMENDATIONS MAY AFFECT DIFFERENT GROUPS IN DIFFERENT WAYS AND TRYING TO TRY TO KEEP THAT IN MIND TO TRY TO CREATE THE MOST EQUITABLE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE THAT WE CAN, REGARDLESS OF LANGUAGE SPOKEN AT HOME OR INCOME LEVEL OF PARENTS OR GUARDIANS, TITLE ONE STATUS OF THE SCHOOLS, THAT KIND OF THING.

SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR RECOMMENDATIONS DON'T PRIORITIZE ANY ONE GROUP, MORE THAN MORE THAN OTHERS MIGHT BENEFIT.

SO SOME OF THE THINGS THAT SHAB HAS WORKED ON IN THE PAST, WE HAVE TALKED A LOT ABOUT NURSING STAFFING IN SCHOOLS AND WE WERE VERY GLAD TO HAVE A NURSE FOR EVERY SCHOOL BUILDING NOW, IN THE PAST, WE ALSO WORKED ON A PARENT AND GUARDIAN SCHOOL NUTRITION SURVEY, TALKED ABOUT WELLNESS INTEGRATION IN SCHOOLS, AND WE HAVE SUPPORTED THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING CURRICULUM, WHICH WE ALL KNOW HAS BECOME EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THESE DAYS WITH THE EFFECTS OF COVID THAT WE'VE SEEN IN THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE TALKED MORE SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THIS PAST YEAR, WE WERE ASKED TO GIVE SOME INPUT ON THE WELLNESS POLICY UPDATES, AND I KNOW YOU ALL HAVE SEEN THE RECOMMENDATIONS AND HAVE CONSIDERED THOSE THINGS THAT WE TALKED SPECIFICALLY ABOUT WERE THE BENEFITS OF ADEQUATE RECESS TIME AND WHAT THE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE FOR RECESS FOR ESPECIALLY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL KIDS TRYING TO GET AS MANY MINUTES AS FEASIBLE IN THE SCHOOL DAY GIVEN THE OTHER LIMITATIONS THAT WE KNOW THERE ARE AND ALSO CONSIDERING FOOD IN CLASSROOMS. WE TALKED ABOUT THIS AT LENGTH DURING OUR MEETINGS AND WE HAD SOME PARENTS COME AND WEIGH IN AS WELL.

FOOD ALLERGIES HAVE BECOME MORE AND MORE COMMON.

AND SO WE, YOU KNOW, AS A GROUP OF HEALTH CARE EXPERTS THOUGHT A LOT ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE FOOD IN CLASSROOMS IN DIFFERENT WAYS.

AND WHAT THAT EXPERIENCE IS LIKE FOR KIDS THAT DO HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES EVEN WHEN PERMISSION SLIPS ARE USED OR THAT KIND OF THING, TO TRY TO MAKE SURE THAT KIDS ARE SAFE.

IT STILL DOES EXCLUDE CERTAIN KIDS FROM CERTAIN PARTS OF REWARDS OR PARTIES OR THAT KIND OF THING.

SO WE ENDED UP RECOMMENDING THAT FOOD BE EXCLUDED AS SORT OF A NON CURRICULUM ASPECT OF THE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE. AND TO THE EXTENT THAT IT IS RELATED TO THE CURRICULUM, WE WERE RECOMMENDING THAT PERMISSION SLIPS ALWAYS BE USED JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE TO REALLY MINIMIZE THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ALLERGEN EXPOSURE.

THE OTHER THING THAT WE TALKED ABOUT A LOT WAS FOOD BEING USED AS A REWARD.

WE ALL HAD HEARD STORIES OF LOLLIPOPS AND SNACKS AND THINGS SORT OF BEING USED TO INCENTIVIZE KIDS TO IMPROVE THEIR BEHAVIOR OR ON FRIDAYS OR AS A SPECIAL TREAT SORT OF TIED INTO BEHAVIOR.

AND THERE WERE MANY OF US THAT FELT STRONGLY THAT THAT WAS NOT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF KIDS, BOTH JUST FROM A NUTRITIONAL STANDPOINT, BUT IN THE BIGGER PICTURE, HELPING CREATE A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOT TIE A PERSON'S WORTH OR BENEFITS OR REWARDS TO NUTRITION.

SOME OF US HAD A BACKGROUND IN DISORDERED EATING AND EATING DISORDERS AND THINGS LIKE THAT, AND SO WE TALKED ABOUT THE RECOMMENDATION TO NO LONGER BE ALLOWED TO USE FOOD AS A REWARD IN THE CLASSROOM.

ANOTHER THING THAT WE TALKED A LOT ABOUT AS A COMMITTEE THIS YEAR IS OF COURSE THE INCREASED MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS.

OBVIOUSLY WE ALL KNOW THAT COVID HAS CHANGED THINGS IN THE SCHOOLS AND MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS HAVE BECOME MORE AND MORE AT THE FOREFRONT OF OF EVERYONE'S MINDS. THE THE MEMBERS OF SHAB WHO WORK DIRECTLY WITH PATIENTS IN PSYCHIATRY OR PSYCHOLOGY SETTINGS TOLD US ANECDOTES ABOUT THE MASSIVE INCREASE THAT THEY'VE SEEN IN BOTH THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS BEING REFERRED TO THEM AND THE SEVERITY OF THE SYMPTOMS OR THE DIAGNOSES THAT THEY'VE SEEN WALKING IN THE DOOR.

YOU KNOW, IT TAKES A WHILE TO GET STUDIES TO REFLECT ALL OF THIS WITH DATA.

AND, YOU KNOW, COVID IS ONLY 2 OR 3 YEARS OLD, BUT THE STUDIES THAT HAVE BEEN DONE HAVE SHOWN SOME OF THEM HAVE SHOWN A 75% OR GREATER INCREASE IN DIAGNOSES LIKE ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, SUBSTANCE ABUSE.

SUICIDE RATES HAVE SKYROCKETED IN TEENAGERS AND PRE-TEENS.

SO KIDS UNDER 13 HAVING SUICIDAL IDEATION OR SUICIDE ATTEMPTS, WHICH IS REALLY SCARY AND NATIONAL AS WELL AS LOCAL ANECDOTES, HAVE SHOWN A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN UTILIZATION OF MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.

SO HOW DOES THAT TIE IN WITH CCPS? WE WORKED WITH SOME OF THE SOCIAL WORKERS AND SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS TO SORT OF UNDERSTAND WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE.

WE CAME TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE BEST PRACTICES FOR STAFFING ARE 1 TO 250 STUDENTS.

SO ONE WORKER PER 250 STUDENTS FOR SOCIAL WORKERS AND 1 TO 500 FOR SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS, WHICH DIFFERS QUITE A BIT FROM OUR CURRENT CCPS STAFFING LEVELS. WE HAVE, AS OF THE TIME THAT WE PUT TOGETHER OUR SLIDES ABOUT 1 TO 2000 STUDENTS IN TERMS OF SOCIAL WORK STAFFING AND 1 TO 1800 FOR SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS. SO OBVIOUSLY THOSE NUMBERS DIFFER QUITE A BIT FROM THE BEST PRACTICES.

SO WE WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST WHATEVER CAN BE DONE TO IMPROVE FUNDING FOR THAT SORT OF MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT, STAFFING IN THE SCHOOLS AND TO CONTINUE HAVING THE SCHOOL NURSES PRESENT IN EVERY BUILDING.

WE LOOK AT KIND OF WHAT WE DO.

WE LOOK AT A COUPLE OF THINGS HERE EMPLOYEE COMMUNICATIONS, MEDIA RELATIONS, CRISIS MANAGEMENT, SEVERAL THINGS THERE.

I DO WANT TO REITERATE WITH THIS SLIDE IS THAT, YOU KNOW, FIRST AND FOREMOST, OUR TWO KEY GROUPS OBVIOUSLY ARE GOING TO BE OUR EMPLOYEE GROUPS AND THEN OUR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY.

ONE OF THE EXCITING THINGS ABOUT WORKING IN COMMUNICATION IS EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT AND WE COVER A LOT OF BASES.

HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THEM WRITING AND EDITING, WEBSITE DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE.

AND HERE I WOULD JUST NOTE THAT IT'S PRETTY UNIQUE FOR A SCHOOL DIVISION, FOR A SCHOOL DIVISION TO DO THIS IN-HOUSE.

SOCIAL MEDIA, GRAPHIC DESIGN AND DIVISION EVENTS AND HERE ARE THE LARGER COMMUNICATIONS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TEAM LEADS MANY THE PLANNING AND EXECUTION OF MANY DIVISION WIDE EVENTS RANGING FROM STUDENT OF THE YEAR, THE ANNUAL RETIREMENT CELEBRATION, THE FALL LEGISLATIVE MEETING AND MORE.

I ALWAYS SAY THAT WE'RE A SMALL TEAM THAT DO BIG THINGS AND REALLY THE VOLUME AND QUALITY OF WORK THAT THIS TEAM PRODUCES IS REALLY INCREDIBLE AND I'M JUST REALLY, REALLY PROUD OF WHAT THEY DO.

WHO ARE OUR TARGET AUDIENCES? PRETTY MUCH EVERYBODY WE COMMUNICATE WITH EVERYBODY EMPLOYEES, STUDENTS, FAMILIES, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, MEDIA BUSINESS PARTNERS, RETIREES, VOLUNTEERS, ALUMNI AND KEY COMMUNICATORS.

AND THE GOAL WITH EACH OF THESE GROUPS CAN VARY AND WE SORT OF LOOK AT THE PARTICULAR SITUATION TO DETERMINE HOW WE'RE GOING TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEM.

COMMUNICATION HAS TO BE STRATEGIC TO BE SUCCESSFUL, AND THE GROUNDWORK OF WHAT WE DO IS LAID OUT IN AN ANNUAL COMMUNICATIONS PLAN.

WE'RE WORKING ON THAT RIGHT NOW.

THE PLAN IDENTIFIES GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR THE COMING YEAR, AND IT'S WHERE WE IDENTIFY INITIATIVES OR PLANS THAT WE WANT TO CONTINUE, AS WELL AS AREAS WHERE WE CAN GROW. WE'RE ALSO STRATEGIC WHEN IT COMES TO SPECIFIC COMMUNICATIONS INITIATIVES.

WE LOOK AT EACH INDIVIDUAL SITUATION TO DETERMINE THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO COMMUNICATE, AND COLLABORATION IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE KEY WHEN IT COMES TO THIS.

WE WANT TO BRING IN ALL THE STAKEHOLDERS AS PART OF THE PLANNING PROCESS.

I MENTIONED STRIDE TUTORING HERE BECAUSE I THINK IT'S A REALLY GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW WE PUT TOGETHER A COMMUNICATIONS PLAN BEFORE THE STRIDE TUTORING ROLLOUT.

WE WORKED WITH DR. POLK'S TEAM TO CREATE A COMPREHENSIVE AND DETAILED COMMUNICATION PLAN TO SUPPORT THAT INITIATIVE.

OUR COMMUNICATION PLAN FIRST ENGAGED EARLY ADOPTERS SO THAT WE COULD GET THEM ON BOARD WITH HOW STRIDE TUTORING WAS GOING TO WORK AND HOW THEY COULD SUPPORT ADOPTION.

WE ENGAGED PRINCIPALS REALLY EARLY ON TO MAKE SURE THEY HAD ALL THE DETAILS AND ALSO SO THEY WOULD KNOW WHAT WOULD BE ASKED OF THEM DURING THE ROLLOUT.

WE DEVELOPED A COMMUNICATIONS TOOLKIT FOR PRINCIPALS THAT GAVE THEM EVERYTHING THEY NEEDED TO COMMUNICATE WITH STAFF, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ABOUT STRIDE, AND THIS INCLUDED PRE-WRITTEN MESSAGES, FAQ DOCUMENTS, PRESENTATION SLIDES, SOCIAL MEDIA MESSAGING, AND IT ALSO INCLUDED A CALENDAR SO THAT THEY KNEW WHEN ALL OF THOSE THINGS NEEDED TO GO OUT.

AT THE DIVISION LEVEL, WE COMMUNICATED ABOUT STRIDE TOO.

I DIDN'T REALLY TALK ABOUT THAT, BUT WE TALKED ABOUT IT IN WEEKLY MESSAGES ON THE WEBSITE, ON SCHOOL WEBSITES, AND WE'RE STILL DOING THAT IN WEEKLY MESSAGES AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA. WE ARE REALLY EXCITED TO LAUNCH A NEW COMMUNICATIONS PLATFORM CALLED APPTEGY.

WE'VE COMPLETED A DIVISION WIDE TRAINING EFFORT AND VERY SOON WE'RE GOING TO BE LAUNCHING .

OUR CURRENT COMMUNICATIONS PLATFORM REALLY ONLY GIVES US THE ABILITY TO SEND EMAILS, PHONE CALLS AND TEXT MESSAGES.

BUT THIS NEW PLATFORM, APPTEGY, IS GOING TO ALLOW US TO INTEGRATE MULTIPLE COMMUNICATION TOOLS FOR A ONE STOP SHOP FOR SCHOOL USERS AND DIVISION USERS. IT'S GOING TO STREAMLINE THINGS SO THAT IT'S GOING TO GIVE US THAT ONE STOP SHOP, BUT IT'S ALSO GOING TO GIVE US A LOT OF NEW OPTIONS.

WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO CONNECT SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS IN APPTEGY, SO WE'LL BE ABLE TO MAKE SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS FROM THERE INSTEAD OF GOING TO MULTIPLE DIFFERENT SITES TO DO THAT. EACH YEAR, WE LOOK FOR VARIED AND ADDITIONAL WAYS TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO STUDENTS, AND THIS YEAR IS NO DIFFERENT.

SO WE WILL BEGIN WITH OUR SUMMER RECAP OF OUR PROGRAMS. WE WILL BE OFFERING FACE TO FACE INSTRUCTION TO ADDRESS THE LEARNING GAPS FOR STUDENTS WHO MADE PROGRESS BUT DID NOT MEET GRADE LEVEL EXPECTATIONS THIS YEAR.

WE WILL HAVE TIER ONE AND TIER TWO INSTRUCTION TIMES AGAIN THIS YEAR, 7:30 TO 11:30 AND THEN 9:00 TO 1 P.M.

FOR CCPS ONLINE WE HAVE 1829 STUDENTS TAKING OVER WELL, TAKING 2,153 COURSES.

THERE IS ALSO A WAITLIST FOR CCPS ONLINE AND WE HAD 200 ON THE WAITLIST AND AT THIS POINT WE'RE DOWN TO 50.

SO WE'RE MAKING SURE THAT WE GET THOSE STUDENTS IN AS WELL.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE TEACHERS IN OUR DIVISION, YOU REMEMBER THE GOOD OLD DAYS WHEN WE HAD COLLECTION AT THE END OF THE YEAR AND IT WAS A BIG DEAL AND THEN YOU HAD DISTRIBUTION LIKE WE'VE MOVED SO BEYOND THAT NOW.

OUR STUDENTS GET TO KEEP THEIR DEVICES.

THEY GET TO CONTINUE TO MAKE ACCESS TO THEIR APPLICATIONS ON THEIR DEVICES.

LAST TIME WE WERE WITH YOU, WE PROMISED TO KEEP COMING BACK AND UPDATING YOU ON TUTORING OPPORTUNITIES AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL.

AS JENNY O'QUINN JUST MENTIONED, WE DO HAVE STRIDE TUTORING CONTINUING WHERE WE LANDED WHEN WE TOOK FROM OUR VERY FIRST DAY, FEBRUARY 28TH THROUGH THE VERY LAST DAY OF SCHOOL, WE AVERAGED STILL ABOUT 200 STUDENT BOOK SESSIONS PER WEEK WITH A 77% ATTENDANCE RATE.

WE HAVE 312 STUDENTS WHO BOOK MULTIPLE SESSIONS AND 56% OF OUR STUDENTS BOOKED AT LEAST TWO SESSIONS.

SO I THINK MS. HEFFRON SAID LAST TIME, TEENAGERS VOTE WITH THEIR FEET AND THEY COME BACK WHEN THEY LIKE IT.

SO THOSE NUMBERS LOOK GOOD.

I THINK THE BOARD ALSO REQUESTED LAST TIME TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT TOP GRADE LEVELS.

SO WE LOOKED THAT UP FOR YOU.

AND WE HAVE IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL, OUR GRADE SIX STUDENTS WERE OUR HIGHEST USE STUDENTS IN NINTH GRADE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.

WE ENDED THE YEAR WITH A 4.92 OUT OF FIVE STAR SATISFACTION RATING.

I THINK IT WAS MS. BAILEY LAST TIME WHO MENTIONED, YOU KNOW, COULD WE AT LEAST ASK THE STUDENTS IF WE FEEL LIKE IT HELPED THEIR GRADES OR HELPED THEIR MASTERY OF THE CONTENT? SO WE ARE LOOKING NEXT YEAR AT ADDING A QUESTION OR TWO IN ADDITION TO THE STAR RATING SO WE CAN GATHER THAT OPINION FROM STUDENTS AS THEY EXIT EACH TUTORING SESSION.

AND WE DID HOLD STRONG WITH MATH, 59% OF THE SESSIONS STILL IN MATH CONTENT AREAS.

ALSO THE LAST TIME I WAS WITH YOU, WE WERE ASKING ABOUT HOW DO STUDENTS MOST EASILY ACCESS THIS? SO ON THE STUDENT DEVICE THAT REMEMBER THEY HAVE WITH THEM AT HOME THIS SUMMER ON THE STUDENT DASHBOARD, THERE IS AN ICON THAT SAYS STRIDE.

THAT IS THE EASIEST AND QUICKEST WAY FOR THEM TO CLICK ON THE BUTTON, PREVIEW THE TUTORS AVAILABLE, MAKE THEIR CHOICES AND CONTINUE LEARNING.

I WOULD ADVISE ANY PARENT OUT THERE, IF YOU WEREN'T HAPPY WITH 1 OR 2 OF THOSE END OF YEAR GRADES WHEN THE REPORT CARDS CAME HOME, IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO KEEP LEARNING, RIGHT? YOU CAN GO RIGHT BACK INTO THAT CONTENT AREA AND BRUSH UP ON SOME OF THOSE AREAS THAT MAY HAVE BEEN A STRUGGLE POINT THIS PAST YEAR.

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT JENNY WAS GOING TO PUT AS AN EXAMPLE THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE COMMUNICATIONS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TEAM AND OUR TEAM ON THE COMMUNICATION OF STRIDE.

SO SCHOOLS HAVE THAT CHOICE.

EITHER WAY, THEY COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR FAMILIES DIRECTLY HOW TO ACCESS READING AND HOW TO LEVERAGE A SUMMER READING PROGRAM.

AND WE'VE LINKED HERE FOR JUST OUR COMMUNITY THE TWO LINKS TO THE COMMUNITY LIBRARY READING PROGRAMS. AND THEN ONE FINAL PLUG FOR SHAWN SMITH AND HIS INCREDIBLE TEAM WE HAVE THROUGH THE OFFICE OF FAMILY ENGAGEMENT.
