FIRST, WE HAVE A PRESENTATION ON THE MIRROR ME PROGRAM FROM DR.

JOHNSON, MRS. BARTILOTTI, AND MR. NEFFINGER.

THANK YOU. GOOD AFTERNOON, DR.

DAUGHERTY. DR TYLUS, MADAM CHAIR AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.

ALMOST A YEAR AGO TO THE DAY MRS. BARTILOTTI, MR. NEFFINGER AND I WERE BEFORE YOU TO SHARE ABOUT MIRROR ME, WHICH IS OUR DIVISIONS TEACHER DIVERSITY INITIATIVE.

AND WE SHARED WITH YOU ALL THAT CCPS LOOKS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS ON A PATHWAY TO TEACH A LICENSURE AND CONNECT THEM BACK TO THE SCHOOL DIVISION AS LICENSED TEACHERS.

AND WE ALSO SHARED THAT WE'D BE PARTNERING WITH UNIVERSITIES, NAMELY VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY AND VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY, TO SUPPORT WITH THIS EFFORT.

BETWEEN MARCH 2021 AND MARCH 2022, WHERE WE ARE NOW, THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF EFFORT GIVEN TO GIVING LIFE TO MIRROR ME.

SO WE ARE EXTREMELY EXCITED THAT WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY THIS AFTERNOON TO SHARE WITH YOU WHERE WE ARE WITH THE EXECUTION OF THIS CRITICAL INITIATIVE.

SO TODAY'S FOCUS TOPICS ARE AS FOLLOWS.

WE WILL REVISIT MIRROR ME'S PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES TO GROUND OURSELVES WITH THE WORK TO BE DONE. SHARE HOW THIS WORK ALIGNS WITH OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, IMAGINE TOMORROW.

SPEAK TO OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY AND VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY. REVIEW WHAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR MIRROR ME.

WHEN WE LAST SHARED ABOUT MIRROR ME, WE STARTED WITH SPEAKING ABOUT THE WHY.

SO TO RE GROUND OURSELVES, WE WANTED TO START THERE AGAIN.

SO BEFORE YOU, YOU SEE THE OBJECTIVES.

MIRROR ME AIMS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF MINORITY TEACHERS IN CCPS, CHANGE THE PERCEPTIONS OF HIRING PRACTICES WITHIN CCPS AND PROMOTE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE TEACHING PROFESSION WITHIN.

THROUGH OUR DIVISION STRATEGIC PLAN, IMAGINE TOMORROW WE SHARE OUR COMMITMENT TO BE INTENTIONAL WITH OUR EFFORTS TO HIRE AND RETAIN STAFF THAT ALIGN WITH THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE COMMUNITY WE SERVE.

WE ALSO SHARE THE STRATEGIES THAT WE WILL EMPLOY TO DO SO.

SO PARTNERING WITH UNIVERSITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS TO SUPPORT RECRUITMENT, CULTIVATE PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL UNIVERSITIES TO PROVIDE CCPS GRADUATES THE OPPORTUNITIES TO COMPLETE TEACHER PREP PROGRAMS AND RETURN TO CCPS AS LICENSED EDUCATORS AND MORE.

SO MIRROR ME SUPPORTS THE WORK THAT WE HAVE SHARED WITH OUR COMMUNITY AS BEING A PRIORITY FOR OUR DIVISION, BUT ALSO THE INTENTIONALITY THAT NEEDS TO OCCUR WHEN WE SPEAK ABOUT INCLUSIVITY AND OUR STUDENTS, STAFF AND FAMILIES FEELING CONNECTED AND REFLECTED.

SO BEFORE YOU, YOU SEE OUR CORE VALUES IN CCPS, OUR CORE VALUES ARE EQUITY, TEAMWORK, INGENUITY AND INTEGRITY.

AGAIN, WE SHARE THROUGH OUR CORE VALUES WHAT'S GROUNDED THROUGH ALL OF OUR PROCESSES TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS THRIVING.

HIRING AND RETENTION PRACTICES SHOULD VERY MUCH BE A PART OF OUR CONVERSATIONS WHEN WE SPEAK ABOUT EQUITY, TEAMWORK, INGENUITY, AND INTEGRITY, AND SO MIRROR ME SUPPORTS OUR COMMITMENT TO OUR CORE VALUES AS WELL.

SHIFTING TO THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE SLIDE, EIGHTY ONE PERCENT OF OUR TEACHERS IDENTIFY AS WHITE, 11.3 PERCENT BLACK, 2.5 PERCENT HISPANIC, 1 PERCENT ASIAN, 2.5 PERCENT

WE'D BE REMISS IF WE DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE DATA IS SIMILAR ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS IT RELATES TO TEACHER DEMOGRAPHICS, AND THERE ARE MANY CONTRIBUTING FACTORS THAT WE CAN SPEAK TO. BUT AS A DIVISION, OUR TEACHER DEMOGRAPHICS MIRROR NATIONAL DATA, NOT THE COMMUNITY WE SERVE.

SO WHY IS PRIORITIZING A DIVERSE TEACHER WORKFORCE IMPORTANT? FIRST AND FOREMOST, OUR COMMUNITY IS A DIVERSE ONE, AND SO OUR TEACHER WORKFORCE SHOULD REFLECT THE COMMUNITY WE SERVE.

WHILE THE WORD INITIATIVE IS PART OF THE TITLE, THIS WORK IS WELL BEYOND AN INITIATIVE.

WE ARE TRULY LOOKING TO SUSTAIN AND CULTIVATE A CULTURE OF RETAINING AND VALUING A DIVERSE TEACHER WORKFORCE.

WE WANT STUDENTS TO SEE THEMSELVES REFLECTED THROUGH THE TEACHERS BEFORE THEM, AND WE WANT TO SUPPORT A PIPELINE BEGINNING WITH OUR AMAZING STUDENTS.

THIS WORK IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US BECAUSE A DIVERSE TEACHER WORKFORCE BENEFITS ALL OF US.

ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AND US, FRANKLY, AS COLLEAGUES.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS IS COMMITTED TO FINDING INNOVATIVE WAYS TO RECRUIT AND SUSTAIN A DIVERSE AND DYNAMIC TEACHER WORKFORCE AT THE LOCAL LEVEL.

SO NOW WE ARE GOING TO SPEAK THROUGH WHAT HAS BEEN PLANNED AND IMPLEMENTED FOR THE EXECUTION OF MIRROR ME.

THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE FOR OUR CURRENT JUNIORS AND SENIORS, AS WELL AS JUNIORS AND SENIORS WHO ARE PART OF TEACHER PREP PROGRAMS AT VCU AND VSU.

APPLICATIONS, WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO SHARE THE APPLICATIONS FOR OUR STUDENTS HAVE GONE LIVE AND WE WANT TO SUPPORT AS BARRIER FREE AN APPLICATION PROCESS AS POSSIBLE.

THEREFORE, THIS IS AN INTEREST BASED APPLICATION PROCESS.

JUNIORS AND SENIORS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN MIRROR ME CAN AND THEY ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY.

ALL HIGH SCHOOLS HAVE RECEIVED WHAT WE ARE CALLING A MIRROR ME TOOLKIT, AND THAT ELECTRONIC TOOLKIT CONSISTS OF APPLICATION LINKS FOR MIRROR ME AN FAQ DOCUMENT FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF.

A QR CODE TO OUR DIVISIONS MIRROR ME WEBSITE AND THE APPLICATION IS ACCESSIBLE ELECTRONICALLY AND IN OUR DIVISION'S TOP LANGUAGES.

SO ENGLISH, SPANISH, ARABIC, CAMBODIAN, VIETNAMESE AND CHINESE.

THE APPLICATION CONSISTS OF THREE SECTIONS, STUDENT INFORMATION, PARENT, GUARDIAN INFORMATION AND STUDENT ESSAY, WHERE WE HAVE ASKED STUDENTS TO SHARE ABOUT THEIR INSPIRATIONS AS WELL AS THEIR ASPIRATIONS.

WHEN WE WERE IN A BRAINSTORMING SPACE FOR MIRROR ME, DR.

DAUGHERTY INVITED SEVERAL OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND PARTNERS TO THE TABLE TO TAKE PART IN THE CONVERSATION AND SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS.

WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH SOME OF THESE SAME INDIVIDUALS FOR THE APPLICATION REVIEW PROCESS, SO MIRROR ME APPLICATIONS WILL BE REVIEWED BY AN EXTERNAL REVIEW PANEL.

AGAIN, THESE ARE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE BEEN PART OF THE CONVERSATION FROM THE ONSET AND UNDERSTAND OR HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO AS A DIVISION WITH MIRROR ME. STUDENT INTERVIEWS ARE ALSO PART OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS.

IT IS NOT JUST A TIME FOR THE PANEL TO ASK QUESTIONS, BUT IT WILL ALSO BE A TIME FOR STUDENTS TO ASK QUESTIONS AND SHARE WHAT THEY WILL LIKE THE PANEL TO KNOW BEYOND WHAT IS PRESENTED ON THEIR APPLICATION.

AND WE ARE VERY MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO IDENTIFYING OUR VERY FIRST MIRROR ME COHORT.

I AM NOW GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO MRS. BARTILOTTI SHE IS GOING TO SPEAK ABOUT SOME MORE ABOUT THE EXECUTION OF MIRROR ME AND OUR PARTNERSHIPS WITH VCU AND VSU.

THANK YOU. IN TERMS OF THIS WORK, SO MUCH OF THIS IS ABOUT REALLY STRENGTHENING A PIPELINE OF STUDENTS TO ENTER EDUCATION, AND AS AN EDUCATOR, I BELIEVE THAT'S SO VERY IMPORTANT. AND SO SOME OF THE SUPPORTS THAT STUDENTS ACCEPTED IN THE PROGRAM WILL HAVE WILL BE ACCESS TO DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSES AT NO COST.

FINANCIAL INCENTIVES, WE HAVE DETERMINED WHAT THAT AMOUNT IS GOING TO BE.

AND SO ONCE ENROLLED AND IN COLLEGE, THEY WILL RECEIVE A STIPEND OF FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS PER SEMESTER TO TAKE CARE OF ANY COSTS, SUCH AS BOOKS, OR MEAL PLANS, ET CETERA.

BUT THEY'RE ALSO GOING TO BE ASSIGNED, AND THIS IS IN KEEPING WITH WHAT BEST PRACTICES.

A MIRROR ME MENTOR AT THE POINT THAT THEY ARE ACCEPTED IN THE PROGRAM.

AND SO WE ARE WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TEAM TO ENSURE THAT THESE CONNECTION POINTS ARE TAKING PLACE.

AND SO THAT WAY THEY WILL BE ONBOARDED AND THAT IT GOES TO, YOU KNOW, BEST PRACTICES THAT WERE USED IN ATTRACTING PEOPLE TO STEM FIELDS, GIRLS TO STEM FIELDS A FEW YEARS AGO, IT WAS FINDING THAT CONNECTION, THAT PERSON THAT MIRRORS THEM, THAT HAS TAKEN A SIMILAR

CAREER PATH. AND THAT ALSO PROVIDES AN ONGOING SUPPORT TOUCHPOINT.

AND THEN RECEIVE PRIORITY HIRING AS THEY ARE GOING THROUGH AS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

THERE ARE POSITIONS THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO WORK OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL DAY FOR OUR SCHOOLS AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS.

ALSO, OPPORTUNITIES TO BE EMPLOYED WHILE THEY ARE UNDERGRADUATES IN COLLEGE.

SO SUBSTITUTES TUTORS IN THE AFTERNOON AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING AS WELL.

AND STUDENTS WILL ACTUALLY HAVE UNTIL THE SECOND OR THE FIRST SEMESTER OF THEIR SOPHOMORE YEAR TO WITHDRAW. SO THEY MAKE THE COMMITMENT AND THEY HAVE TO MAKE THE FINAL DECISION BY SOPHOMORE YEAR.

IN TERMS OF THE WORK THAT WE'VE DONE SO FAR, IT REALLY HAS KIND OF FALLEN INTO THREE BIG CATEGORIES. ONE IS AROUND THE COMMUNICATION PLAN.

SECOND IS ENGAGING STAKEHOLDER GROUPS.

AND SO WHO DO WE NEED TO TALK TO ABOUT THIS? SO THAT WAY THEY CAN CARRY THE MESSAGE AND THEN REALLY LOOKING AT PARTNERSHIPS WITH PEOPLE THAT HAVE SHARED VALUES.

SO THAT COMMUNICATION PLAN WORKING WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA.

DEVELOPING A WEB PRESENCE ON OUR DIVISION SITE WITH ADDITIONAL FAQS AND INFORMATION.

SO IT'S A ONE STOP SHOP.

PRINT MATERIALS, AS IN DR.

JOHNSON REFERRED TO FOR SCHOOLS AND PARTNER INSTITUTIONS THAT CAN BE USED, THEY'RE BRANDED WITH THE SCHOOL DIVISION AND THE DIVISION AND THE ORGANIZATION'S LOGO AS WELL.

THE GROUPS THAT WE'VE PUT IN BECAUSE THIS IS NOT JUST WE BELIEVE THAT THIS IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T BECOME TEACHERS BECAUSE OF SOMEONE THAT WORKED IN HUMAN RESOURCES.

PEOPLE BECOME TEACHERS BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE THAT THEY INTERACT WITH, THE PEOPLE THAT INSPIRE THEM.

AND SO REALLY MAKING SURE THAT WE ALL ARE ABLE TO TO SHARE THIS MESSAGE.

AND SO PULLING IN BEYOND OUR SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAMS, OUR EQUITY LEADS, WE'VE ASKED PRINCIPALS TO IDENTIFY A MIRROR ME LIAISON AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.

WE HAVE GROUPS THAT ROUTINELY COMMUNICATE WITH TEACHERS, SO THAT WAY THEY'RE SHARING OUT THROUGH CEA AND THE EQUITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

AND SO AS WE START TO ENGAGE PEOPLE IN THIS WORK, IT'S MORE PEOPLE TO SHARE IT OUT.

AND THEN THE EXTERNAL APPLICATION REVIEW COMMITTEE THAT WAS SELECTED, PEOPLE WERE ASKED TO VOLUNTEER FOR THIS.

AND MANY OF THE PEOPLE THAT ARE DOING THIS FOR PEOPLE THAT SAT ON SOME OF THE FUNDING GROUPS THAT ARE SUPPORTING THIS INITIATIVE.

SO ROBIN'S FOUNDATION, COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, OTHER BUSINESSES WHO SAID, YES, WE WANT TO HELP YOU IN THIS WORK.

WE'RE KEEPING THEM CONTINUOUSLY ENGAGED IN IT.

SO THAT WAY IT BECOMES SOMETHING THAT THEY'RE DOING AND NOT SOMETHING THAT THEY'RE JUST PAYING FOR. AND THEN THE TWO BIG PARTNERSHIPS WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH VCU AND VSU, THEIR SCHOOLS OF EDUCATION AND REALLY FINDING THOSE CONNECTION POINTS THERE.

WE HAD, AS DR.

JOHNSON SAYS, EACH UNIVERSITY HAS IDENTIFIED A LIAISON FOR THEIR UNIVERSITY THAT THEN WE ARE WORKING WITH HAVING ONGOING MEETINGS WE'VE GOTTEN IN FRONT OF THEIR STAFF.

OUR INFORMATION IS GETTING TO THEIR STUDENTS AND WE ARE ACTUALLY GETTING INFORMATION AND REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION FROM STUDENTS CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN PROGRAMS AT BOTH OF THOSE UNIVERSITIES BECAUSE THEY TOO ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE.

THE PROGRAMMATIC SUPPORTS WHILE THEY'RE IN COLLEGE ARE A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN THE STUDENTS GRADUATING FROM CHESTERFIELD.

BUT CERTAINLY BUILDING THAT CONNECTION POINT, HAVING THE DIRECT LINE TO HR HAVING THE OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK FOR CHESTERFIELD WHILE THEY FINISH THEIR DEGREE IS IN PLAY.

IT WILL ALSO HELP US SCALE THIS MORE QUICKLY.

AND SO JUST SPEAKING TO SOME OF THOSE THINGS, LIKE I SAID, THE CO-BRANDED MATERIALS AND JUST MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE IN FRONT OF AS MANY PEOPLE AS WE CAN BE AND THAT THE PEOPLE THAT ARE CHAMPIONING THIS WITH US HAVE THE TOOLS THAT THEY NEED TO TO TAKE THIS MESSAGE FORWARD. SO I WORK IN HUMAN RESOURCES, AND I'M GOING TO SPEAK ABOUT SOME OF THE BENEFITS FOR COMING TO WORK FOR CHESTERFIELD.

NUMBER ONE IS PARAMOUNT COMPETITIVE COMPENSATION, STRONG BENEFITS AS WELL AS A MEMBERSHIP IN THE VIRGINIA RETIREMENT SYSTEM.

ONE THING I NOTICED WITHIN MY OWN WORK THAT I DO EVERY DAY IS WHEN GOOD MINDS MEET, GREAT THINGS TEND TO HAPPEN.

WE LIKE TO FOSTER THOSE RELATIONSHIPS IN THOSE COMMUNITIES WITHIN OUR TEACHERS, AS WELL AS WITHIN OUR STAFF.

THERE'S A VERY STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AS WELL.

I'VE RECRUITED ON QUITE A FEW POSITIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THAT WE NEEDED A PRETTY STRONG RESPONSE FROM OUR COMMUNITY TO HELP US OUT.

AND I'M HAPPY TO SAY THAT EVERY TIME THEY'VE COME THROUGH AND THEY'VE SHOWN UP TO OUR JOB FAIRS OR APPLIED TO POSITIONS WHEN WE NEEDED HELP FOR CERTAIN HARD TO FILL AREAS.

SO WE KNOW WE HAVE A STRONG COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTS THEM BEHIND THAT AS WELL.

THERE'S MANY ROADS TO PROMOTION THROUGH EITHER ADMINISTRATIVE OR LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. MANY OF THE ADMINISTRATORS AND LEADERS WITHIN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, MOST OF THEM USED TO BE FORMER TEACHERS AND A GOOD BIT OF THEM USED TO BE CHESTERFIELD TEACHERS AS WELL.

THAT'S NOT TO SAY THAT WE DON'T WANT TO PROMOTE OR HIRE PEOPLE FROM OTHER PLACES AS WELL, BUT WE DO HAVE A CULTURE WHERE WE DO WANT TO FOSTER OUR OWN AND GROW THEM TO BE OUR NEXT LEADERS. THERE'S VARIOUS DISCOUNTS YOU CAN HAVE THROUGH THE COMMUNITY FOR BEING A CCPS EMPLOYEE. AND FINALLY, THERE IS A CULTURE HERE WHICH FOCUS ON GROWTH, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AS WELL AS A RECOGNITION OF PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT.

A LITTLE PERSONAL STORY HERE.

LITTLE DID I KNOW OR ANYBODY KNEW A PANDEMIC WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN, SO IT'S KIND OF A WILD RIDE. BUT I WOULD SAY THAT EVERYWHERE, FROM MY SUPERVISORS TO MY COWORKERS TO THE PEOPLE THAT WORK FOR ME, I'VE NEVER WORKED ANYWHERE THAT HAS SUCH A COLLABORATIVE AND SUPPORTIVE GROUP, AND I'VE GROWN QUITE A BIT.

AND I KNOW OUR TEACHERS IN THE FUTURE AS WELL AS THAT ARE GOING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS PROGRAM ARE GOING TO HAVE THE SAME EXPERIENCE THAT I DID.

SO WITH THAT, I'LL GO AHEAD AND HAND IT BACK TO ALMOST THERE WE ARE.

WE'RE ALMOST THERE, ALMOST.

NOW ALMOST FINISHED, BUT WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL ABOUT MIRROR ME'S NARRATIVE PROJECT.

PERCEPTION IS REALITY, AND IT IS IMPORTANT TO CAPTURE THE VOICES OF THOSE WHO DO THE WORK EACH AND EVERY DAY OF INSTRUCTING AND SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS.

AND SO AS PART OF SHARING ABOUT OUR TEACHER DIVERSITY INITIATIVE AND SUPPORTING THE MESSAGE THAT A DIVERSE TEACHER WORKFORCE BENEFITS US ALL.

WE INTRODUCE THE NARRATIVE PROJECT OR MIRROR ME NARRATIVE PROJECT COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, BUT THE NARRATIVE PROJECT ALLOWED TEACHERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES PERSONALLY, PROFESSIONALLY, WHATEVER THEY WERE COMFORTABLE WITH SHARING AS IT RELATES TO THE EXPERIENCE, THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH TEACHER DIVERSITY AND ALSO THEIR SUPPORT FOR TEACHER DIVERSITY.

AGAIN, COMPLETELY OPTIONAL.

TEACHERS WERE INVITED TO SHARE WHAT THEY FELT COMPELLED, AND COMFORTABLE TOO AS IT RELATES TO THEIR EXPERIENCES.

SO I AM JUST GOING TO READ A FEW OF THE EXCERPTS THAT HAVE BEEN SHARED FROM CURRENT CCPS TEACHERS. AND SO IF YOU LOOK AT THE SCREEN, IT'S VERY, IT'S SMALL TEXT, SO I WILL READ IT ALOUD. STARTING AT THE TOP LEFT.

IN 1995, I STARTED KINDERGARTEN IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AS THE ONLY HISPANIC GIRL IN THE GRADE, MY BLACK FRIZZY HAIR AND HAZEL EYES STOOD OUT AMONG MY PEERS.

WHAT ARE YOU? IS A QUESTION I WOULD OFTEN GET.

MY PARENTS AND I SPOKE ENGLISH AT HOME BECAUSE THEY WERE TOLD THAT A SECOND LANGUAGE WOULD HINDER MY GROWTH IN READING AND WRITING ENGLISH.

I DID NOT HAVE A SINGLE HISPANIC TEACHER THROUGHOUT MY EDUCATION.

I HAD MAYBE TWO TEACHERS THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE EDUCATION THAT HAD AN ETHNICITY OTHER THAN WHITE. I REALLY DIDN'T REALIZE THE EFFECTS OF THIS UNTIL I BECAME AN ADULT, AND I NOW REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF A DIVERSE WORKFORCE, ESPECIALLY IN EDUCATION.

TOP RIGHT, THROUGH MY 13 YEARS OF PUBLIC SCHOOLING, I HAD A TOTAL OF FOUR BLACK BROWN TEACHERS THAT LOOK LIKE ME.

I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION I RECEIVED WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT, BUT I BELIEVE THE CONNECTIONS I BUILT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE MEANINGFUL.

LAST YEAR WAS MY FIRST YEAR OF TEACHING, AND ONE OF MY FAVORITE MEMORIES IS WHEN A STUDENT WALKED IN WITH HER NATURAL HAIR IN A BLOWOUT SIMILAR TO MINE, AND THE WHOLE CLASS SIMULTANEOUSLY SAID, YOU TWO ARE TWINS.

MY STUDENT WAS ABLE TO EXPERIENCE THIS DUE TO HAVING A TEACHER THAT MIRRORED HER.

BOTTOM LEFT. SPEAKING FOR MYSELF, I CAN SEE HOW THE TIMES THAT I GREW MOST IN AWARENESS, ALLYSHIP AND ADVOCACY WERE TIMES THAT I SPENT SIGNIFICANT TIME AND QUALITY CONVERSATIONS WITH PEOPLE WHO WERE DIFFERENT FROM ME.

I WENT THROUGH ALL OF MY EDUCATIONAL COURSES, BEING THE ONLY ASIAN IN THE ROOM.

I WAS THE ONLY ASIAN TEACHER IN THE SCHOOL WHERE I TAUGHT, AND I WAS THE ONLY ASIAN ADMINISTRATOR IN MY PREVIOUS SCHOOL DIVISION.

AND SO WHEN I MET SOMEONE WHO CONNECTED WITH ME ON MY FIRST DAY OF WORK AT CCPS, I KNEW I HAD ARRIVED AT THE RIGHT PLACE.

AGAIN, ALL REFLECTIONS FROM CURRENT CCPS TEACHERS.

AND SO WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT THIS, BUT JUST WANT TO POINT OUT SOME OF WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS TEACHERS OF COLOR BOOST THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS OF COLOR, INCLUDING IMPROVED READING, AND MATH TEST SCORES, IMPROVED GRADUATION RATES AND INCREASES IN ASPIRATIONS TO ATTEND COLLEGE.

TEACHER DIVERSITY MITIGATES FEELINGS OF ISOLATION, FRUSTRATION AND FATIGUE THAT CAN CONTRIBUTE TO INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS OF COLOR LEAVING THE PROFESSION.

BLACK STUDENTS WHO ARE EXPOSED TO ONE BLACK TEACHER BY THIRD GRADE, WERE 13 PERCENT MORE LIKELY TO ENROLL IN COLLEGE.

WHITE STUDENTS REPORTED FEELING ACADEMICALLY CHALLENGED AND CARED FOR BY THEIR TEACHERS OF COLOR. THE LAST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, A DIVERSE TEACHER WORKFORCE BENEFITS ALL STUDENTS, AND SO SOME NEXT STEPS.

AGAIN, WHILE THE WORD INITIATIVE IS A PART OF THE TITLE, THIS IS NOT A ONE AND DONE OR ONE YEAR EFFORT. SO WE WANT TO CONTINUE OUR COMMUNICATION WITH OUR UNIVERSITY PARTNERS IN OUR HIGH SCHOOLS SO THAT WE CAN BE SURE THAT THIS OPPORTUNITY IS IN THE HANDS OF OUR STUDENTS, WORK COLLABORATIVELY AND HAND IN HAND WITH OUR PARTNERS TO IDENTIFY OUR FUTURE MIRROR ME COHORTS.

APPLICATIONS WILL BE REVIEWED QUARTERLY AND WE WILL HAVE A TRACKING SYSTEM SO THAT WE CAN KEEP TRACK OF ALL OF OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE INTERESTED.

WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS WE'VE DONE ACCOMPLISHMENT WISE AS WELL AS TO GIVE YOU SOME HIGHLIGHTS ON SOME UPCOMING INITIATIVES.

OBVIOUSLY, A BIG FOCUS WHEN I LAST PRESENTED TO THE BOARD ON THIS TOPIC IT WAS BACK IN, I BELIEVE, AUGUST AT A WORK SESSION.

WE TALKED ABOUT SOME OF THE WORK THAT AMY AND HER TEAM HAVE BEEN WORKING ON AS FAR AS ALIGNING SOME OF OUR PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES, AND WE'LL DISCUSS SOME OF THAT LATER IN THIS PRESENTATION.

ANOTHER HIGHLIGHT THERE, OBVIOUSLY, IS THE MIDDLE AGES PIECE WITH WORKING WITH THE VIRTUAL SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES WHO ARE TRANSITIONING.

SOME OF THE NEW PIECES THAT WE'VE SORTED THROUGH THE PROGRAM THIS YEAR, WHICH THE BOARD HAD AT THE LAST MEETING, OBVIOUSLY WAS A CHANCE TO INTERACT WITH THE LEARNING WITH YOU PARTICIPANTS. WE HAD A REALLY PHENOMENAL RESPONSE WITH THIS BRAND NEW INITIATIVE.

WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING ANOTHER COHORT PARTICIPATE IN MAY OF THIS YEAR.

EVERYONE'S VERY FAMILIAR WITH THIS CCPS ON THE GO VAN, WHICH IS OUT THERE IN THE COMMUNITY. WE HAVE HAD A LOT OF POPCORN AND A LOT OF SNOW CONE SYRUP, I LOVE THOSE STATS, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, OBVIOUSLY, WAS THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT ARE CONNECTED, ALMOST 7000 PEOPLE CONNECTED.

AND SO WE LOVE THIS INITIATIVE NOT JUST FOR THE ASPECT OF GETTING THE WORD OUT THERE IN THE COMMUNITY ABOUT OUR ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS, BUT ALSO THE CHANCE, OBVIOUSLY, TO INTERACT WITH OUR FAMILIES AND OUR COMMUNITIES AND OUR SCHOOLS.

OUR HALL OF FAME GALA, AND YOU'LL NOTICE THE FIRST BULLET POINT IT SHOULD BE 2021, ACTUALLY, BUT THE INAUGURAL HALL OF FAME WAS BACK IN DECEMBER.

WE WERE GLAD TO FINALLY HOST THAT EVENT.

I THINK WE FINALLY HAVE HOSTED SOME OF THE REOCCURRING EVENTS.

WE'RE BACK UP TO SPEED NOW WITH HALL OF FAME, RETIREMENT, AND TEACHER OF THE YEAR [INAUDIBLE] AS OF LAST NIGHT, AT LEAST.

WITH THAT, OBVIOUSLY, WITH THE LAST TIME WE RAISED ABOUT $11,000 GOING INTO THE NEXT HALL OF FAME GALA. OBVIOUSLY, THE DESIGNATED RECIPIENT OF THAT WILL BE CONEXUS [INAUDIBLE] THE VERY FAMILIAR WITH THEIR WORK AND THE EFFORTS THEY'VE DONE WITH OUR SCHOOL DIVISION AND OUR FAMILIES. AND THEN THE PINK FLAMINGO CAMPAIGN, [INAUDIBLE] INITIATIVE THAT DR.

DAUGHERTY BROUGHT TO US, VERY WELL RECEIVED OUT THERE IN THE COMMUNITY, $15,000 WERE RAISED, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, WE HAD THE DISTRIBUTION OF COATS THROUGHOUT OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, SO WE KNOW THAT WAS A WELCOME SIGHT TO OUR FAMILIES AS WELL.

AMY AND HER TEAM OBVIOUSLY HAS SPENT A LOT OF TIME AND THEY'VE BEEN DOING PHENOMENAL WORK UNDER HER LEADERSHIP WITH HER TEAM MEMBERS IN A SMALL TEAM, BUT DONE A LOT OF GREAT WORK.

THEY REALLY HAVE TAKEN SERIOUSLY THE EFFORTS TO ALIGN SOME PARTNERSHIP EFFORTS BECAUSE WE WANT TO BE REFLECTIVE OF THE NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY, BUT ALSO OUR SCHOOLS.

SO SHE'S GOING TO TALK ABOUT TWO KEY INITIATIVES WE'RE GOING TO START, OBVIOUSLY, HERE SHORTLY. SO BACK AGAIN, WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS BUREAU AND REALLY WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, PUBLIC EDUCATION MATTERS.

AND WE'LL DO SO BY HIGHLIGHTING INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS AT THE SCHOOL AND DIVISION LEVEL AND THE IMPACT THAT THEY HAVE MADE.

SCHOOLS WILL BE GIVEN TOOLKITS TO RECOGNIZE THEIR PARTNERS, AS WELL AS HIGHLIGHT PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT THE DIVISION AND AT THE SCHOOL LEVEL.

THE PORTAL WILL BE ABLE TO CONNECT THE POTENTIAL VOLUNTEER THROUGH THE SCHOOL'S PREFERRED SIGN UP METHOD IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THE CLEAREST OF PATHWAYS.

AND WE CURRENTLY HAVE ALREADY HAVE OVER 255 STUDENTS WHO'VE EXPRESSED INTEREST IN TAKING SOME OF THESE COURSES.

ONE OF THE NEW THINGS THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING THIS YEAR, AS EVERY YEAR WHEN YOU DO SOMETHING, YOU KEEP ADJUSTING TO MAKE SURE IT'S BETTER AND BETTER, ONE OF THE THINGS WE RECOGNIZE IS THAT THE WAY WE HAD TO RUN IT LAST YEAR, WE HAD LOTS OF SEPARATE REGISTRATIONS OCCURRING AND IT WAS SOMETIMES DIFFICULT FOR SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS.

SO WORKING WITH MR. LONGWORTH AND CCPSONLINE, WE WERE ABLE TO CONSOLIDATE, SO THAT WAY WE HAVE ONE REGISTRATION PROCESS.

IT ALLOWS THE TEACHER TO HAVE ONLY ONE SECTION, THEREFORE, THEY HAVE ONE GRADE BOOK VERSUS 11, AND IT ALSO ALLOWS OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE CHOOSING TO REMAIN VIRTUAL TO HAVE A VERY CLEAR LIST OF DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSES THAT THEY ALSO COULD TAKE THAT WOULD FIT WITHIN THEIR SCHEDULE IN A SYNCHRONOUS MANNER.

SO WE REALLY THINK THIS WORKS OUT BEST FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.

AND AS WE SAID, ALREADY, OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE WE'RE PROVIDING THAT RIGOROUS COURSEWORK FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AS THEY NEED IT.

SO THAT IS A DATA SET THAT THE SCHOOLS LOOK AT FREQUENTLY, I DON'T KNOW OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD OR CURRENT PERCENTAGE, BUT THEY ARE CONSISTENTLY LOOKING AT THAT AND THEY'RE TRYING TO LOOK AT IT IN TERMS OF STUDENTS TAKING ONE COURSE, NOT THE NUMBER OF OVERALL DE COURSES, BECAUSE THEY'RE TRYING TO LOOK TO MAKE SURE EVERY STUDENT TAKES AT LEAST ONE VERSUS ONE STUDENT TAKING SEVEN.

SO THEY ARE CONSISTENTLY DIGGING INTO THAT, AND THIS RIGHT NOW IS AROUND THE TIME OF THE YEAR WHERE THEY'RE LOOKING AT FOR THE COMING SCHOOL YEAR.

STUDENTS FINISHED UP COURSE REQUESTS, THEY'RE HAVING THOSE ONE ON ONE MEETINGS WITH SCHOOL COUNSELORS, TALKING TO FAMILIES, TRYING TO HELP INCREASE THE RIGOR FOR THOSE STUDENTS AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHAT SCHOOLS OFTENTIMES FOCUS ON TOO TO HELP MAKE SURE STUDENTS ARE READY FOR THE DUAL ENROLLMENT IS THEY START REALLY IN THAT NINTH GRADE, MAKING SURE THAT STUDENTS NOT CURRENTLY IN AN HONORS COURSE, HELPING THAT STUDENT GO AHEAD AND TAKE AN HONORS COURSE IN 10TH GRADE OR MAYBE EVEN 11TH GRADE, SO THAT WHERE THEY'D BE READY TO TAKE THAT DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSE OR AN AP COURSE DURING THEIR SENIOR YEAR. BUT THAT IS THE DATA THAT WE CONSISTENTLY LOOK AT AND WE ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO IMPROVE ON IT. AS WE ALL KNOW, COVID WAS A HARDER YEAR.

WHENEVER YOU LOOK AT THOSE THINGS, BECAUSE REALISTICALLY, THE WAY THAT WE GET STUDENTS TO SOMETIMES STEP OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE IN ORDER TO TAKE A COURSE THAT THEY MIGHT NOT OTHERWISE TAKE IS THROUGH THE RELATIONSHIP THEY BUILT WITH TEACHERS, AND OFTENTIMES IT'S AT SIDEBAR CONVERSATION THAT YOU'RE HAVING.

WE ALL RECOGNIZE THAT THE HIGH SCHOOL LAST YEAR WE DID NOT HAVE 100 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS RETURNING IN PERSON.

SO THOSE SIDEBAR CONVERSATIONS OFTENTIMES A LITTLE BIT MORE DIFFICULT FOR STUDENTS TO HAVE AND FOR TEACHERS TO HAVE. WE WERE REALLY THOUGHTFUL IN TRYING TO HAVE THEM.

BUT WE RECOGNIZE THOSE DAY IN DAY OUT CONVERSATIONS HELP PUSH KIDS TO SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO. SO WE REALLY DO CONSISTENTLY LOOK AT THAT.

WE ALL RECOGNIZE THAT WE HAD TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXPERIENCES DURING OUR TWO YEARS OF COVID. AND ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO IS FOR THIS COMING SPRING, WE'RE GOING TO BE GOING BACK TO WHOLE CLASS GRADUATIONS AT VCU AND VIRGINIA STATE, AND THE BENEFIT OF THAT IS THAT IT ALLOWS ALL OF OUR STUDENTS TO GRADUATE TOGETHER, WHICH THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DO FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS.

AND SO THAT'S REALLY EXCITING FOR OUR SCHOOLS, FOR THE STAFF AND FOR THE STUDENTS TO REALLY BE ABLE TO BE TOGETHER DURING THAT TIME.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE ALWAYS RECOGNIZE IS THAT SCHOOLS WILL BE SENDING OUT INFORMATION THROUGHOUT THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.

NOT UNLIKE OTHER INITIATIVES, WE HAVE RUN INTO SOME SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES AND SOME TARIFF ISSUES AND YOU KNOW, THINGS OF THAT NATURE.

A LOT OF THESE MATERIALS ARE IMPORTED FROM CHINA.

A LOT OF THEM ARE STUCK IN LONG BEACH, SO TO SPEAK.

THE PRICE INCREASES THAT OUR INSTALLER HAS MENTIONED, WE'VE TAKEN TO ACCOUNT AND WORKING WITH OUR PARTNERS IN THE COUNTY, CLAY BOWLES, JULIA REYNOLDS, THEIR ENERGY MANAGER.

WE HAVE ASKED SUN TRIBE SOLAR FOR SOME VERY SPECIFIC AND CONCRETE RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT WHAT WE NEED TO DO AND THINK ABOUT IN ORDER FOR US TO MOVE FORWARD.

AS YOU KNOW, THERE ARE 12 CCPS SITES ON THAT LIST AND WE WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO PUT SOLAR PANELS ON ALL OF THEM, AS WELL AS ALL OF THE NEW SITES THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT AS WELL, MAKING SURE THOSE ROOFS ARE SOLAR READY.

DAUGHERTY. WE DO HAVE A VERY BRIEF UPDATE ON A PREVIOUS PRESENTATION ON EXPANDING RECESS AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL.

WE WILL BE REVIEWING SOME OF OUR CURRENT PRACTICES, AS WELL AS NEXT STEPS IN LOOKING AT THOSE POSSIBILITIES.

CURRENTLY, 43 PERCENT, OR 17, OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS HAVE MULTIPLE RECESS TIMES FOR AT LEAST ONE OR MORE GRADE LEVEL SCHEDULED IN THEIR MASTER SCHEDULE THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY. MOST OF THOSE ARE TARGETED AT OUR YOUNGER GRADE LEVELS K, FIRST, ALTHOUGH THERE ARE A HANDFUL OF SCHOOLS WHO HAVE MANAGED TO FIND MULTIPLE RECESS BLOCKS FOR ALL THEIR GRADE LEVELS. ALSO, 11, OR 28 PERCENT, OF OUR SCHOOLS HAVE INDICATED THAT THEY HAVE A REGULAR USE OF OUTDOOR CLASSROOM OR LEARNING SPACES.

THOSE MIGHT INCLUDE USING PICNIC TABLES OUTSIDE FOR CLASSROOMS.

THEY'RE EXPANDING PICNIC TABLES, PTAS HAVE DONATED ADDITIONAL PICNIC TABLES, LEARNING GARDENS, COURTYARD SPACES OR EVEN SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED OUTDOOR CLASSROOMS THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN CREATED BY A BOY SCOUT--.

THE EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT.

SO OUR NEXT STEPS IN THIS EFFORT TO POTENTIALLY EXPAND SOME RECESS OPPORTUNITIES IS AS SCHOOLS ARE CREATING THEIR MASTER SCHEDULES, AND NOW IS THAT TIME, WE WILL ENCOURAGE MORE SCHOOLS TO FIND THAT TIME IN THEIR DAY TO PROVIDE AT LEAST TWO OF THE RECESS BLOCKS, AND THESE WOULD BE 15 TO 20 MINUTE RECESS OPPORTUNITIES VERSUS THE 30 ONE BLOCK.

ALSO TO INCREASE OUTDOOR LEARNING AS POSSIBLE OR AS WEATHER PERMITS, INCORPORATING PLANNED BRAIN AND MOVEMENT BREAKS THROUGHOUT THE INSTRUCTIONAL DAY AND TO DESIGNATE SPECIFIC DAYS LIKE WELLNESS WEDNESDAYS, WHERE THE STAFF AND STUDENTS ARE FOCUSED ON HEALTH AND WELLNESS AND MOVEMENT THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

AND SO AGAIN, WE CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR THOSE OPPORTUNITIES AND ENCOURAGE THE SCHOOLS IN THEIR EFFORTS TO PROVIDE THAT MOVEMENT THROUGHOUT THE DAY FOR OUR YOUNGEST LEARNERS.

SO MAYBE IN A FUTURE UPDATE AND WE EVEN HAVE A LOCAL ONE OF OUR OWN, A FORMER CCPS TEACHER, DR.

MISTI MUELLER, IS AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT VCU SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, AND SHE'S THE PROGRAM COORDINATOR FOR HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION.

AND SHE TEACHES HER STUDENTS SO THEY'RE PREPARED TO UNDERSTAND WHEN THEY GO AND TEACH, AND EVEN TO ADVOCATE IF THEY END UP IN A BUILDING THAT MAYBE IS NOT SOLD OR HER STUDENTS ARE READY TO GO AND CONVINCE EVERYBODY.

AND I JUST SHE HAS THIS PRESENTATION THAT SAYS, WHY IS MOVEMENT IMPORTANT? AND SHE HAS THIS QUOTE, IN ORDER FOR A MAN TO SUCCEED IN LIFE, GOD PROVIDED HIM WITH TWO MEANS EDUCATION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, NOT SEPARATELY, ONE FOR THE SOUL AND THE OTHER FOR THE BODY, BUT FOR THE TWO TOGETHER.

WITH THESE TWO MEANS MEN CAN ATTAIN PERFECTION.

AND THAT WAS PLATO THAT SAID THAT.

SO I THOUGHT THAT WAS INTERESTING THAT, YOU KNOW, A VERY LONG TIME AGO, PEOPLE KNEW THIS WAS IMPORTANT. I KNOW THAT BEFORE COVID, THE SCHOOLS WERE DOING MORE.

I KNOW THAT AT LEAST ONE SCHOOL HAD, ROBIOUS ELEMENTARY, HAD A 40 TO 45 MINUTES FOR ALL KIDS K-5, OTHER SCHOOLS THAT IT JUST FOR LIKE K-1ST.

SO I'D LOVE TO KIND OF MAYBE FIND OUT HOW THEY DID IT.

SHARE THOSE BEST PRACTICES.

I'D LOVE TO KNOW WHAT THE THINGS THAT GET IN THE WAY.

I WOULD IMAGINE, YOU KNOW, I FOUND THAT WHEN WE WERE RETURNING KIDS TO SCHOOL AND EVEN NOW IN FUNDING, YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY LIKE THINGS HAVE TO SHIFT THERE TOO.

YOU KNOW, WHY DO WE NEED TO GO AND TALK TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ABOUT.

SO THAT OUR SCHOOLS ARE SUPPORTED SO WE CAN REALLY MOVE TO BEST PRACTICE FOR RECESS AND OUTDOOR TIME? THAT'S ALSO SUPPORTED BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT EVERYBODY'S BURNT OUT.

WE CAN'T JUST DO ANOTHER THING WITHOUT SUPPORTING, SO.

I GUESS THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY.
