WHILE DOCTORS AND NURSES WERE RISKING THEIR LIVES AS A DEDICATED DAY AFTER DAY TO THEIR PATIENTS, OUR TEACHERS AND SCHOOL SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS SCRAMBLED TO DELIVER LESSONS VIRTUALLY AND TO DELIVER FOOD AND OTHER ESSENTIAL SERVICES TO CHILDREN. I WANT TO LET THAT SINK IN. WHILE OUR NATION BATTLED A VIRUS THAT KILLED FIVE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY ONE THOUSAND AMERICANS AND SICKENED 32 MILLION, EDUCATORS IN CHESTERFIELD RALLIED TO OFFER THE VERY BEST INSTRUCTION THAT COULD BE DELIVERED SAFELY TO KEEP THE FLAME OF LEARNING BURNING BRIGHT. THEY ARE FRONTLINE WORKERS. THEY ARE LOCAL HEROES, AND THEY CERTAINLY SHOULD BE TREATED WITH THE UTMOST RESPECT, DIGNITY AND PROFESSIONALISM. NO ONE WHO ROSE TO THIS INCREDIBLE CHALLENGE OVER THE PAST YEAR SHOULD BE TREATED AS A SCAPEGOAT. EVERY CHILD DESERVES A CHAMPION QUALIFIED AND A COMMITTED TEACHER, JUST LIKE THOSE THAT ARE HERE IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY. BECAUSE OF COVID-19, WE SHOULD BE HAVING CONVERSATIONS ABOUT RECRUITING AND RETAINING OUR BEST AND BRIGHTEST, NOT NON RENEWALS. DURING RECESS, ALL THE GIRLS WOULD SING WHITNEY HOUSTON SONGS WITH THEM BELTING OUT OF TUNE PF COURSE, I BELIEVE THE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE. FOURTH, FIFTH, SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADE. I HAD AT LEAST ONE TEACHER WITH DARKER SKIN THAN ME. MY SEVENTH GRADE TEACHER HAD US MEMORIZE A PORTION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.'S FAMOUS SPEECH AND RECITED IT IN FRONT OF THE CLASS. MRS. HURST WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TEACHERS. MY EIGHTH GRADE ALGEBRA TEACHER, NINTH GRADE EARTH SCIENCE AND INTRO TO BUSINESS TEACHERS, 10TH GRADE BIOLOGY AND KEYBOARDING ELEVENTH GRADE HEALTH AND ADVANCED MATH AND TWELFTH GRADE PHYSICS AND CALCULUS TEACHERS ALL HAD DARKER SKIN THAN ME. THEY WERE ALL AMAZING. AND THE FACT MY TEACHERS AND I HAD DIFFERENT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS DID NOT MATTER. THEY WERE MY TEACHERS AND HELPED FOSTER MY SUCCESS. MY LIVED EXPERIENCE GOES AGAINST SEVERAL THINGS I HAVE READ RECENTLY FROM THE VDOE AND CCPS'S MIRROR ME INITIATIVE. I'M NOT SURE WHAT HAS HAPPENED SINCE 1995 WITH THE TEACHER POPULATION, BUT IF YOU DIVE INTO THE WHY, I BET YOU WOULD DISCOVER IT IS NOT BASED ON PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS, BUT THE RED TAPE AND EXTRA WORK TEACHERS HAVE TO DEAL WITH TODAY. TEACHERS HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME IN 2021 DOING WHAT THEY ARE CALLED TO DO. TEACH THE BASICS MATH, READING, SCIENCE, ETC.. PUBLIC EDUCATION IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE MELTING POT OF AMERICA I LEARNED ABOUT DURING MY PUBLIC EDUCATION CAREER. AN AMERICA, WHERE WE LOVE, RESPECT AND APPRECIATE EACH OTHER BASED ON CONTENT OF CHARACTER, NOT COLOR OF SKIN. WHAT IS BEING DISCUSSED AT THE VDOE AND RECENT CCPS TRAININGS IS FOCUSING ON ONE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTIC JUST ONE. AND WE'LL TEACH OUR CHILDREN ANYTHING BUT MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR'S DREAM. SO WHY IN THE MIDDLE OF A GLOBAL HEALTH PANDEMIC DURING A NATIONWIDE TEACHER SHORTAGE, ARE WE LETTING ANYONE GO? WE CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE ANY EMPLOYEE. IS THERE A WAY TO SUPPORT THROUGH CORRECTIVE MEASURES AND MENTORING TO REASSIGN TO A NEW PLACE IN A NEW WORKSITE OR ALLOW ONE TO TRANSFER IN AN EFFORT TO RETAIN THOSE WHO ARE INDEED CERTIFIED, KNOWLEDGEABLE AND STILL WILLING TO EDUCATE OUR YOUNGEST CITIZENS IN THIS IMPERFECT WORLD? IN YOUR RESOLUTION THAT WAS PASSED BACK IN JUNE OF 2020 THERE IS A PHRASE THAT THAT STATES OUR SCHOOL DIVISION CAN AND WILL BE A SANCTUARY OF SAFETY IN OUR COMMUNITY. MY POINT IS THIS RETENTION IS EQUAL TO THE FEELING OF SECURITY AND THEREFORE SAFETY. EMPLOYEES ARE NOT AT THEIR BEST WHEN THEY DON'T FEEL SUPPORTED. WHEN A COMPLAINT COMES TO YOU FROM THE COMMUNITY, DON'T THROW THE EMPLOYEE OUT WITH THE BATHWATER. TAKE CORRECTIVE STEPS AND LISTEN FOR THESE CUES THAT SPEAK TO THIS IMPERFECT ENVIRONMENT.
